I don't much care for the ones you can buy. I really love the big productions, it's just that they often accompany huge crowds, wait times, and the hassle of getting in and out before you get caught in a herd of people. So I generally don't get to experience them much. When I was younger I made the effort to get as front row as possible and it was epic.

So really I will be glad when these next couple of days are over. He definitely can't stand the quarter sticks being blown off.
I had a dog like that. Anything loud would set her off - thunder, fireworks, a car backfiring. I felt so bad for the poor thing, nothing would console her. I always knew a thunderstorm was coming long before I heard it!

I enjoy fireworks. They never really got old for me. My dog isn't a huge fan of them, but thankfully, our neighborhood is pretty strict about fireworks, she doesn't have to deal with them. It's a couple minute drive to set some off and then watch the display, which is pretty nice. The biggest problem where I live is that it's a desert, so all the vegetation is highly flammable. If you're not careful, you could start a fire pretty quickly, and some idiot does almost every year.

Banning them however, is a ridiculous proposition.
Social democrat is no longer an accurate description of my views.

    Elaborate, if you wish.
You mean the city displays at the 4th? They're alright. But they should allow more and better personal fireworks; now that's where the true fun is.

A lot of dead people would agree with you.

    Talk to this guy: http://news.yahoo.com/police-man-sho...135937499.html

When you have idiots fooling with fireworks you're going to have deaths and injuries.

When I was a teen in NE, we used to drive down to Missouri every year and buy M-80s in a plain brown bag from under the counter. The last year that we went down there, we got imitation ones that were an M-80 outside red packaging with a lady finger firecracker hidden inside. We were bummed. When the ladyfinger didn't pop, it would just shoot out a ton of sparks, Like the one that I threw into the tall dry grass at a favorite lake resort in NE (teen hangout).

Trees 40 feet tall were ablaze. Thank God that the fire fighters were able to put that fire out before it burned up the whole place. I've always felt bad about that big mistake.

EDIT: I think I post this every year. lol
A family visiting from the Midwest set off firecrackers in Griffith Park, which is dry as a bone. Sure enough they started a huge fire, burned down a ton of the park, and I imagine that they're still paying for it to this day.

You know I hate to say that we need more government involvement in simple, basic day-to-day things, but then you have this guy. I swear, some people need others, if for no other reason than to save them from themselves.

That guy is not worthy of being included in the "That's a tragic accident" category. That guy committed unintentional-but-voluntarily suicide by gross stupidity and should not be included in serious discussion.

That story begs the question: how did he make it to his 22nd birthday?

Most noteworthy quote from the article: "Devon was not the kind of person who would do something stupid."
