I don't care about fireworks one way or the other, but I'm pretty passionate that they should be legal for regular citizens.

Depends on the climate and conditions. My son was to go play with some kids near July 4th one day, and for whatever reason I had a really bad feeling about it, so said no. I had no idea what was planned by the boys, just had a really bad feeling. Fortunately for me, my kids believed in my "bad feelings" as they had panned out to be accurate a number of times before, and my son honored not going.... Yeah, the boys decided to do fireworks, mostly illegal due it being a desert with the nearby (within one or two steps) dry foothills, and they caught north Boise on fire. Their parents paid out the arse for that, I was so glad it wasn't me. Anyway, my point is that there are places where fireworks are just so stupid and could cause so much damage that they should be illegal.

hate them, especially the blasting kind with nothing but a bang (and no beauty).

But I do not think it should be banned. Preferably I would love official shows only but do not think people should be limited in such a manner if they enjoy setting off fireworks. But it has to be done to very strict laws, as strict as possible. In the Netherlands firework shows are done by city council's etc. on King's Day and consumer fireworks is only allowed to be sold in the 3 days before the 31st of December but is illegal to be used until the 31st of December from 18.00 in the evening until 02.00 on the 1st of January (so all in all 8 hours).

You can only use fireworks bought in the Netherlands (due to our product safety laws) which is not as powerful as those sold (for example) in Belgium. Smuggling it across the border, storing it in an unsafe way and selling illegally imported fireworks can lead to jail and heavy fines. Setting it off before 18.00 on the 31st of December will lead to fines or alternative punishments (especially for underage offenders).

I'm an American.

I love stuff that goes, "BOOM"!

'Nuff said.

I find the prohibition of them, especially on the day to celebrate independence and liberty, particularly depressing and hypocritical.

On this day I say, To those whose view of liberty is merely being free to do as they are told, go **** yourself.

From the state of Maryland, where our 2nd Amendment right to bear arms does not extend beyond our doorframes and the best fireworks we can lawfully wield are sparklers designed for children...

Wow, been lots of Freedom sounds around this evening. Everybody and his brother celebrating their liberty. :D

Carefully I hope. :)

We didn't have a professional show this year locally; the local Nat'l military park boss and the town leaders had a falling out over it. Pity, the fire dept put on some really nice ones in years past.

But the local folks almost made up for it in volume in not quality. :D

How am I supposed to know how to vote without a left-leaning / right-leaning qualifier? A pox on your house.

Here, they're all illegal. I like to giggle at stories of people permanently scarring themselves because they're drunk and ****ing around with shoddy, illegal fireworks.

Potential dangerous fun that should be supervised by adults and regulated during dry conditions.

I'm playing party pooper this year though. I caught sickness a couple days before today and would get a lot of folks sick, including babies...so I'm staying behind.

My kids love them.

My kids went out tonight to a fireworks show on the waterfront, but Hubs and I stayed home and watched reruns of The Newsroom.

My dog went nuts when the idiots in my neighborhood started shooting off firecrackers, but she eventually got used to it.

I don't much care for the ones you can buy. I really love the big productions, it's just that they often accompany huge crowds, wait times, and the hassle of getting in and out before you get caught in a herd of people. So I generally don't get to experience them much. When I was younger I made the effort to get as front row as possible and it was epic.

I don't care for them that much anymore, and they do bother my dog. To the point that he shakes non-stop when they blow them off around here. Won't stop shaking until they are done. He literally has to be held and be close to somebody. Which is usually me. The Vet gave us some pills to calm him down due to shaking so bad. But they really don't stop him from shaking.

So really I will be glad when these next couple of days are over. He definitely can't stand the quarter sticks being blown off.

I had a dog like that. Anything loud would set her off - thunder, fireworks, a car backfiring. I felt so bad for the poor thing, nothing would console her. I always knew a thunderstorm was coming long before I heard it!

I enjoy fireworks. They never really got old for me. My dog isn't a huge fan of them, but thankfully, our neighborhood is pretty strict about fireworks, she doesn't have to deal with them. It's a couple minute drive to set some off and then watch the display, which is pretty nice. The biggest problem where I live is that it's a desert, so all the vegetation is highly flammable. If you're not careful, you could start a fire pretty quickly, and some idiot does almost every year.

Banning them however, is a ridiculous proposition.

Fireworks... your opinion? See poll.

Elaborate, if you wish.

You mean the city displays at the 4th? They're alright. But they should allow more and better personal fireworks; now that's where the true fun is.

I saw on the news last night, that on the average, 18,000 fires are started in the USA by fireworks every July 4th.

When I was a teen in NE, we used to drive down to Missouri every year and buy M-80s in a plain brown bag from under the counter. The last year that we went down there, we got imitation ones that were an M-80 outside red packaging with a lady finger firecracker hidden inside. We were bummed. When the ladyfinger didn't pop, it would just shoot out a ton of sparks, Like the one that I threw into the tall dry grass at a favorite lake resort in NE (teen hangout).

Trees 40 feet tall were ablaze. Thank God that the fire fighters were able to put that fire out before it burned up the whole place. I've always felt bad about that big mistake.

EDIT: I think I post this every year. lol

A family visiting from the Midwest set off firecrackers in Griffith Park, which is dry as a bone. Sure enough they started a huge fire, burned down a ton of the park, and I imagine that they're still paying for it to this day.

A lot of dead people would agree with you.

Talk to this guy: Man shoots off firework from top of his head, dies instantly

When you have idiots fooling with fireworks you're going to have deaths and injuries.

You know I hate to say that we need more government involvement in simple, basic day-to-day things, but then you have this guy. I swear, some people need others, if for no other reason than to save them from themselves.

Like the professional fireworks shows, after A Capitol Fourth would not be the same without them! Used to enjoy sparklers as a kid at 4th of July parties with family friends but my neighbors have to shoot the stupid things off every year! Scares my dog to the point of hiding under the bed all night.

What I absolutely HATE are the fireworks at the state fair! Sure they're pretty and everything but American Saddlebreds are skittish horses! To make matters worse they shoot the stupid things off from the pond right across the street from the horse show arena. I took my horse to the fair once, NEVER AGAIN! Well medical issues prevent her from staying overnight in unfamiliar surroundings anyway, so that's the main reason why she is retired. Still she went berserk when the fireworks went off. She's always been a spooky mare to begin with though. Anyway one of her stablemates had to have cotton shoved into his ears or he would go berserk. Someone else had to load their horses onto the trailer every night and drive around in Raleigh so they wouldn't flip out.

That guy is not worthy of being included in the "That's a tragic accident" category. That guy committed unintentional-but-voluntarily suicide by gross stupidity and should not be included in serious discussion.

Sounds more like a Darwin Award winner.
