Sounds like what my granddaddy used to always say. Slavery was the best thing to ever happen to blacks. Although he had no problem with the black people who worked hard and got an education to make something of themselves. I don't even think he hated Colin Powell, who happens to be black, but very educated and high ranking officer in military. Never heard him say a bad thing about Condi Rice either for that matter.

In your grandfathers time...how easy was it for black people to get a quality education, fair chances at employment with similar wages, etc?

Good for the ones that had decent access....but I assure you, across this country...particularly in the South.....achieving your grandfather's expectation could be a challenge to next to impossible.

I know it wasn't easy. The elite schools in Richmond were white only. In fact granddaddy's alma mater Benedictine College (now Benedictine High School) in Richmond eventually became integrated. There are pictures on their website showing some black students. Benedictine College Preparatory -> Home Unfortunately the main problem seems to be that in the lower income black family, education is just not a priority, overall that is. I know there are exceptions, but it seems to be the general rule. I don't know how to fix it either unfortunately

Maybe if blacks hadn't inherited a legacy of slavery, segregation, the inability to inherit property, weren't subjects of systematic discrimination, etc., for most of American history, they'd be on an even playing field with whites. I'm glad your Confederate-flag flying grandfather applauded the 'exceptions', though.

It was the times he grew up in. Granddaddy was born in 1911 and the South was very different from the way it is now back then. He came around in his later years though I think. Like I said I never heard him say a bad thing about black leaders like Colin Powell or Condi Rice.

Just one example was there is a cafeteria in Richmond near my grandparents' apartment they lived in before they moved to Florida with my uncle. They remained there until my grandmother passed, then granddaddy moved in with us until he passed 10 years ago this December. I miss them both so much I can't wait to see them again someday. Anyway there was this black man who worked there, very friendly and always took time to say hello to customers. He and granddaddy got along well, granddaddy was always friendly to this man, even though he was black, it didn't matter. Anyway the last time I saw him (in 2002) he told me he could remember when I was just a little girl and remarked that I was all grown up now. It had been so long since we had seen him I was actually surprised he remembered me at first.

Like I said I never heard him say a bad thing about black people who worked hard and made something of themselves. When GWB was President I never heard him say a bad thing about Condi Rice, or Colin Powell for that matter. I think he was glad they did work hard for their success and achieved it.

That's not how 'not being racist' works. You respect all people by default, not those who meet your ideological expectations. You are not racially tolerant because you respect the exceptions who are not thugs.

Yet it seems like blacks are more racist than whites if you look around. Not being racist at all here just making an observation. They constantly blame white people for holding them down, yet they don't look up to the ones who have gotten an education and made something of themselves. There are a lot of positive black role models out there that if we could get black kids to look up to they might eventually gain true equality.

    How so?

Nothing exists in a vacuum, so what are you saying? That blacks are genetically prone to blame others for their problems, that Democrats are to blame, rap music, black culture -- what?

Let me just say that you are a terrible spokesman for the Confederate flag. Or maybe the perfect spokesman, given your views and upbringing.
