I'd say the force of will in such situations wasn't "great". In the incidents I mentioned, the Presidents were able to work with Congress to get things done. These are people who didn't present themselves as the greatest or only voice, such as your current President does, but they do, through the force and righteousness of their words, get people to follow, even those who might not normally do so.

Force of will doesn't have anything to do with division, the only playing card of President Obama. It has to do with uniting divergent opinions behind you. President Obama learned nothing from successful Presidents who preceded him throughout the years. Ego is not often a characteristic of greatness in politics.

Then it wouldn't be "force of will" if it's "easily stymied".

Precisely. There are very few past examples -- virtually zero -- of THAT kind of presidential "greatness."

No. You missed the point... but to be fair, I could have elaborated better, too. Anyway, there have been some. Not many, but some.

Ronald Reagan can be considered a great leader, a great President, in my view, because of the way he lifted the American psyche when it needed it most.

Great Presidents aren't always successful in everything they do but they can be, with their personality and determination, the driving force behind important accomplishments.
If pushing through major legislation is your criterion, Obama would seem to qualify in spades.

Clearly, you didn't understand my point. Even Obama's so called signature legislation, the ACA, wasn't his, it was Nancy Pelosi's, and the country is still not with him on it and his fellow Democrats have abandoned him. What's all this "major legislation" that Obama has pushed through? Perhaps you're referring to his signature legislation on immigration reform, his major promise in the 2008 election? Oh, never mind.

The first two years of the Obama presidency saw more major legislation passed than any time since the 89th Congress (the Great Society Congress). So if getting significant policy changes passed is your benchmark--and indeed the Great Society is your example--the list of presidents who stand toe-to-toe with LBJ on productivity and major legislation is fairly small. But Obama is on it.
