How long does it take to truly assess a President?

Judging their performance as President... their legacy and how they rank among other Presidents.
 
20 years would be a bare minimum.

Agree, some maybe much longer. the harm or good a president does might continue based on his appointments to the supreme court.
 
20 minimum. The first string of documents are released about then. Most political historians are only now paying attention to Clinton, and have only really started covering HW Bush.

I was thinking when I saw the question that 50 sounded like a good round number, but it was not an option.

Keeping in mind, of course, that each generation starts asking new questions of the past due to their experiences.

Take the legacy of ping-pong diplomacy. We are now beginning to see the third wave of its impact. Nixon has been gone a long time.

George Washington left office in 1797, does anyone think that it's too early to start taking a look at his impact on the USA?

BTW: He didn't chop down the Cherry tree.
 
I hesitated between 10-20 years and 20+ years but opted for the former. I think a reasonable and sensible assessment is possible after that time, although the assessment of a presidency will of course fluctuate over time.
