I personally don't think they should. There should be laws to protect them ( to an extent) but they should not have rights, but it seems many on youtube think they should have rights.

Do a little research. there are laws all over this planet to protect animals.

You are talking about something that is well under control.

Are all of those laws enforced?

You can't stop people from killing other people on this planet, get a grip.

Anytime animal rights interfere with my right to enjoy a nice rib-eye, that's where I draw the line.

Where is the logic other than in what people like. If most people want laws to protect animals? In some western societies the laws protect present animals better than absent persons. You would for instance go to jail for willfully letting an animal drown; at least a higher animal. Where the cut off downwards is? Who knows?

I'm a vegan and I don't think animals should have rights. Animals don't want rights. The concept of rights is a human construct. I am all for animal welfare laws and laws against animal cruelty.

But to me with rights come responsibility and accountability. And you can't hold an animal responsible or accountable for their actions. A dog may know he will get punished if he pees inside but he doesn't know why he should be punished for it.

I might be willing to make an exception for a handful of species among the apes and cetacea who may demonstrate a higher level of understanding. But even then the rights I think they should be granted are dwarved by the number of rights I think humans should have. The right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? Sure, why not? The right to an education or healthcare? That is ridiculous.

**** no.

****,mother have a right to be in my ****ing stomach. This PETA **** and all that other bull****, because that's what it is, bull****, can all go to hell.

Speaking of which, I'm going to eat a ****ing hamburger right now.

Clearly, I'm not a supporter of the moo-vement

I support some limited forms of animal rights. The reason is squarely aimed at the food industry.

If we are going to subjugate an animal for our use, then we should also accept the responsibility of its humane treatment. I believe they should be entitled to a minimum standard of reasonable living conditions.

Its one thing to kill animals for food, but animals should have rights and a certain quality of life up to that point far, far beyond what we have today. Whether you call them rights or protection or whatever I do think more should be being done to improve the life of animals.

Why do you think the humane slaughtering of an animal for food and proper animal husbandry are always exclusive? Just because we eat meat, it does not necessarily mean the animal was reared in a most horrendous way and had a horrible torturous death. Unfortunately, in today's age of factory farming, mistreatment of animals *IS* the norm. This is why animals should have rights. They deserve to be treated in the most humane way, even if they will eventually end upon a dinner plate.

A Bill of Rights for Animals, sounds like a quick way to get us to a Zombie Apocalypse. Who all is ready?

It's not a matter of giving rights to animals but instead it's about not giving humans the right to torture and abuse them. Animal cruelty and negligence should be a punishable offense. The more hideous and negligent the crime the more punishment there should be.

No, animals have no rights, they are property. We can make laws that protect animals from abuse, but these are privileges we grant. It's proper to grant these privileges and to enforce them, but fundamentally they are not rights. Property cannot hold rights.

Mom had this hanging on the wall when i was a kid. it's one of my favorites, and it is appropriate here.

A man of kindness, to his beast is kind.
But, brutal actions, show a brutal mind:
Remember, He who made thee, made the brute,
Who gave thee speech and reason, formed him mute;
He can't complain, but God's omniscient eye
Beholds thy cruelty - He hears his cry!
He was designed thy servant; not thy drudge,
But know - That his Creator is thy judge.

as for the OP, yes, animals should have rights. assholes who torture or starve their animals should go to jail.

on other issues, i'm much more conflicted. i might lose my job soon, and an opportunity to move seamlessly into a job where i would be working directly with mice opened up. part of my job would have been to put them in CO2 chambers to kill them. absolutely no ****ing way. i just can't. i understand that animal research is a vital tool for science, but i can't do it.

hunting? maybe, if my family needed it. meat eating? i've been doing less of it, but i do still eat meat.

these things make me something of a hypocrite. however, yeah, toss the ****ers who starve their horses or torture animals for fun into the damned klink. and Japanese "research" whalers? i would sink those ****ers with torpedoes.

Interesting that you offer with snarkiness a rebuttal that says that exact same thing he said.

Animals are property. They have no rights.

I don't care how they treated the cow before I ate it, I care about the quality and price of the meat.

If you care about such things, you along with others provide a market force for a more expensive but friendlier slaughterhouse - whatever that may mean, given the end result.

It's not a concern for law, though - as previously mentioned, animals have no rights.

Get caught by the law mistreating animals and you'll get a lesson on that.

I don't require any sort of lesson in what those laws are, nor do I have any interest in mistreating any animals.

Those laws, of course, remain illogical and unjust.

Your thinking sounds very reminiscent of the argument used to justify human slavery.

I agree with you that "rights" are a human construct. When the great primates and the dolphins can participate in our current discussion, then they'll have "rights."

But one of the reasons I believe in hell is because there has to be a place for those who are cruel to animals.

"They aren't human" So? You treat your pets well and they're not human.

"They aren't conscious of what's going on for there to be a loss in their death." Well, same goes for human infants and again, pets. May as well kill them and sell their carcass at meijer's too i guess, or on a trophy display.

"I need to eat them to survive and other species kill each other for the same purpose." No junk food or vegetables for you then

Species are going extinct at 100-1000x the normal rate, and it's entirely due to humans.

Animals aren't capable of understanding or exercising rights, so they shouldn't have them. There should be (and are in most places) laws in place to protect animals. In some cases these laws need to be better enforced. But animals don't need, or want, rights.

Your thinking sounds very reminiscent of the argument used to justify human slavery.

This statement is just as logical as saying we shouldn't use antibiotics because the thinking behind them is very reminiscent of the argument Hitler used to justify the holocaust.

If you read the statement as written, it is neither logical, nor illogical. It is simply a recognition of a similarity of thinking processes. It neither promotes, nor condemns, any action.

They should be given the same rights as people, the right to vote, the right to own property, and all of the freedoms guaranteed by the constitution
