Our VFW had a BBQ with pulled pork and tenderloins--does that count? :)

After a bouquet tossed in the river for those lost at Sea, we had a great service in our park's War Memorials with many words still with me.

It's always good to teach the kids about the ## names on the World War stone--since it was engraved before WW2--and the ## names from WW2.

Kids were asking about the ## from Vietnam because their ranks are given with their branch of service--and ## from Korea.
Quite the sacrifice for a small town.

Good on all of y'all, man. I know it was a grand time for all involved. (Too early for famous Illinois cream corn, however. Right? ;))

Have you received a card from the VA or a Nearby Mental Health Clinic yet?
One of the Commanders spoke of it today and wasn't too pleased with the confusion coming from th VA.
I'm surmising it was about PTSD and will look into it.
Sounds like out-reach clinics the VA may use at local Hospitals with excellent Mental Health Clinics .

Nothing yet from my local VA and I am on their mailing list. But then again, my local VA is Phoenix. From what I read it remains cluster****.

Memorial Day is to honor our fallen soldiers. And we should do that, absolutely. But, is it acceptable to BBQ on Memorial Day, or should we spend the day in deep thought and solemn remembrance?

I spend all day at military graves in reverence and in total silence...

I don't either, but some people (here at DP and elsewhere) are acting like it is. Hence, the question.

Whoever is thinking that is either incapable of rational thought or has too much time to think about something so relatively minor.

Possibly both.

Yes, we should solemnly remember but also celebrate what those lives meant. Same with civilian funerals. I love hearing about people having a great time at a funeral!

You aren't. Someone did.
Then why address your comments regarding attacking Obama to me, especially when I have already directly addressed the issue to the one that did?

The BBQ is to help remember the people who were burned to death by firebombs.

An Irish wake.
My Aunt and Uncle when I was growing up, had one of the larger houses and wakes were held there due to small community and many not able to afford a funeral home.
Where tea was on the stove and food was plentiful. People grieved and laughed and most importantly remembered the deceased and the community was brought closer by this.

You are allowed to grill food, however you should otherwise be sitting in ashes and practicing self-flagellation. Ice cream is definitely out of the question.
I prefer the line the walls with Black plastic trash bags and close the curtains so that no light can enter. Then cut myself and cry in the dark while listening to emo music.

The most interesting funeral I have ever been to was the funeral of my wifes mother. She is Filipina and they have a completely different tradition then americans have. They bring the body to the house in an open casket and keep it there for 7 days while people come and visit to pay their respects. During this time, they raise money for the funeral and the festivities by having games. Kind of like card games and gambling. Its like a 7 day long party with alcohol, gambling and karaoke. Of course the family would have moments of solidarity where they would pray or sit with the casket and have moments of silence. But for the most part, everyone drank, gambled and sang until they passed out or were to tired to continue.

That is not called for.

There are people who are downright outraged that Americans are enjoying the freedoms that our veterans fought and died for. It's a disgrace.

I sense a bit of sarcasm. I'm not really sure if this is a serious question or not. Hell, I am an active duty member and I know all my buddies have their grills outside right now. So I am not really sure why you're asking.
It is a serious question, though there probably is a bit of sarcasm, too. I'm very sarcastic by nature. Anyway, this year, for the first time, I'm catching a degree of shaming directed toward people who use the holiday to relax and/or have a good time. This attitude baffles me. I was curious how prevalent this feeling was. Not very, it turns out, which is nice.

I have never heard anyone say that you could not have a good time on memorial day. I could understand someone who lost a soldier in their family maybe not having such a good time on a day like today, but for the most part, everyone I know has a blast on memorial day.

Take it to another thread. This Thread borders on a RIP.
Is this a dialogue involving you? And for that matter...why didnt you address your comment to 'the other guy'? Oh yeah...THATS why....

I was watching Pain and Gain last night, Mark Whalbergs movie... and they wanted to get the finger prints off a dead guy so they BBQ's his hands in a grill in the front yard. Weird.

That is what Hitler used to do prior to founding the Nazi's:

Because BBQ'ing is about Free Speach.

If you're not a petty, partisan, loser, then there's not one on this planet.

You constantly post comments opposing President Obama but when have you ever offered any reasonable ideas?

With you, it's all about opposing the Black guy in the White House.

If that upsets you then all that I'm going to say is that maybe, just maybe, you need to adjust your attitude just a little. You are way out of touch with most Americans.

Obama will be in the White House until another Democrat takes his place in 2017.

Wait and see.

If you don't think so, that's just more evidence that you're out of touch.

Come back and tell me all about it after the election next year.

The clock is ticking.

I think you should do whatever the heck you want to.

These soldiers died to preserve America. And America is supposed to be about Freedom...freedom of expression and speech and to do whatever you want to that does not directly hurt others.

If that means a BBQ or fireworks or silence...it's TOTALLY up to you and anyone who says otherwise is acting 'un-American' and trying to force you to conform to their will; and probably using patriotism as the justification.

Do whatever you want to and if someone tries to force you to do otherwise (assuming you are not hurting them directly)? Tell them 'I am American and I am free to do and act and say what I wish...that is what the soldiers died to protect'. If they keep bugging you...tell them to buzz off.

Depressing that this thread turned into "Oh you hate the black man in the White House".

To answer the OP, people should be free to celebrate a national holiday and a 3-day weekend as they choose without being made to feel guilty in any way.

Sunday night my wife and I were at the memorial day concert on the mall. That was after visiting the vietnam wall, where i would take my dad every year before he passed.

The national memorial day concert is one of those things you have to see at least once.....

We also visited the new memorial dedicated to the wounded.....spectacular

To me, a veteran, the day is about what is important in our country.....and it isnt something you can buy

And the men and women who laid it on on the line so that we can share the freedoms we have

Monday we BBQ'ed and had a picnic at a local park, and enjoyed a spectacular day

To me it doesnt matter how, or even if you celebrate memorial day.....

For those of you who do, hopefully you thought about the same types of things i did.....

Held those close to you.....and whispered a little prayer for the fallen......

And were proud to be part of the red, white, and blue
