Of course...all of this not withstanding, you DO understand it was still stupid of the democrat party rep to post a pic of Obama eating an Ice Cream under the heading "Happy Memorial Day!"...right?
There's no such thing as the "democrat party."

I don't agree with all the BBQing and stuff going on, because you are actually celebrating the deaths of tens of thousands of soldiers who died for this country. I actually heard a waitress behind me at dinner tonight say, "Happy Holidays!"

However, I don't think we should sit around in quiet reflection, either. Maybe have rememberance ceremonies where the towns honor the soldiers who they've lost. Something like that. I just don't agree with the fact that it's a holiday to celebrate, with BBQ and going to the beach.

That's just me, though. Seeing people loaded with racks of ribs, and watermelon and fresh corn, and the lines halfway to the back of the grocery store today, I'm certain that I am in the minority.
No. Life must go on. I had friends that fought in Iraq, and if they were here, they would be having a beer and enjoying life with us. :

Why wouldn't barbecue be ok? Is there something somehow sacred about ovens and microwaves that permits their use on this day of honor? People pick the weirdest things to get outraged about.

i get that there are some people who will look for any excuse to have a party, and that to them, the party part is all that is important.

but for most others, if they are aware of the holiday, then they will at least take a few moments to acknowledge the occasion in some small way.

drinking and grilling is not necessarily disrespectful. my grandfather served, and before he died, he asked that there be a luncheon after the funeral that was a "celebration of his life". we drank and ate and raised our glasses once or twice and toasted to his memory.

as long as you took just a little bit of time to reflect on the occasion, i see nothing wrong with making it a celebration. after all, they died so to protect our freedom to do whatever we want

We should enjoy the life that their sacrifice has bought. To honor the brave solemnity is not required, remembrance and appreciation is.

But you know what the VA is still running like a three legged dog. Veteran's often cannot get adequate mental health care. Veteran's often still find it difficult getting jobs paying living wages once they rejoin civilian life.

In my opinion most veterans would prefer to give up discounts at Bubba's Squat & Gobble and other fine establishments; they would prefer to give up the now almost national feel good patriotic moment requirement to honor a military person before every sporting or public event and they wouldn't give a rat's ass about barbecuing on any day IF America would actively force the government to honor the commitment it made to veterans when vets raised their right hands and to stop the habit of throwing them into harm's way when it isn't completely necessary.
    Well said.

Not only on public perception and reputation, but cops simply won't want to police these neighborhoods anymore.

I sense a bit of sarcasm. I'm not really sure if this is a serious question or not. Hell, I am an active duty member and I know all my buddies have their grills outside right now. So I am not really sure why you're asking.

    - Idealistically, everything should work as you planed it to. Realistically, it depends on how idealistic you are as to the measure of success.
