After the election in 2016: Do we need higher or lower taxes?

Neither raise or lower taxes... for now.

The wiser choice would be to go through all of the tax code looking for all the political gifts and other distortions we can remove. Only when we simplify the tax code itself then can we decide on rate per income bracket, and we might just find the rate itself can go down for just about everyone. Two benefits at once. One, it makes the process of handling income reporting far easier for far more tax payers. Eliminating the costs of dealing with this accurately. Two, we still get to retain a progressive tax system but with far less jump between the brackets. Which has the benefit of tax payer expectation without the distortions of some paying far more than others exclusively because of failing to meet the "political gift" standard.

Under this plan there is a good chance more will come out better off once we remove enough insider tax code entries that benefit few.

tax all income as income above a cap, and cut the corporate rate.

I'd be satisfied with a return back to post war tax levels.

I would keep taxes the same for the rich. I would lower then a lot for the middle class and lower them a little for the poor.

Kill the carried interest BS
Treat capital gains as normal income
Estate Tax above 500k/heir
End EITC
Institute 5% VAT
Increase Gas Tax (fed and state)
Increase marginal bands by 2% Across the Board (Fed)
Open federal drug dispensaries and sell ultra premium product (and make it capital crime if caught with off market goods)

Budget Balanced.
You're Welcome.

We need lower taxes and we need to make severe cuts.No more overlapping agencies. No more foreign and military aid to other countries. No more grants to useless studies.Let the states pay for and manage education. disband the NSA,Make severe cuts to the CIA, we shouldn't be interfearing with other countries in the first place.Legalize or at least decriminalize recreational drugs. And I am sure if I looked further into the buget there would be other cuts to be made as well. When our government spends money like a drunken trophy wife with her husbands no limit credit card the one thing we should not do is give them more money. Those severe cuts should be made first and only then if that is not enough to pay off our debt then we should temporarily raise taxes to help pay off the debt.

If you spent literally ZERO federal dollars, it would take at least 5 years to pay off our debt at current tax/revenue loads. (assuming the economy wouldn't collapse under zero spending, but that's another story).

Which begs the question, why does the debt NEED to be paid off?

flat tax better, no income tax at all best

the current system guarantees more and more government and more and more pandering

Lower taxes and drastically lower spending.

The poll is unanswerable for me, btw. I lean neither right nor left.

a statement like this has quantifiable metrics that can justify it.

please give some.

are you denying that the USA was moving to a position of world primacy prior to the odious income tax was imposed?

So you think in 1861 the United States was (almost) the world power?

by 1900 it was and that was before the odious 16th amendment was passed.

Ignoring the claim about "by 1900" (I disagree)

Good thing the 16th amendment was the first time we had income tax.

Ooops. It wasn't.

it was the first time it caused a nationwide progressive income tax to survive court challenges and be established permanently. the main push for the income tax actually came from the anti drinking fanatics

We need to scrap the whole system and start over. I favor consumption taxes with prebates for necessities.
