Re: US Political Situation Better or Worse in your Lifetime?

My lifetime is that long, but I do feel it is getting worse and I'm failing to see how things will improve until something catastrophic happens to finally get changes pushed through.

It feels business are just becoming more consolidated into mega-corps, people and voters are moving further and further to the extremes of both parties and causing gridlock, meanwhile infrastructure is failing apart, we are falling behind on most everything, and yeah.

Not to mention our politics are basically ruled by the rich dumping tons of money into elections, making it impossible for the common man to run for any political office outside maybe their local positions (even that is getting iffy. Hell Tempe's mayor race, each candidate spent over 150,000 dollars.

It's in a several year slump, but I believe it can rebound.

The poll choices are inadequate. For me, I believe the political situation is worse than it's ever been in my lifetime. Will it improve? Not in my lifetime, but eventually it will have to improve or it will collapse of its own corruption, and be completely replaced.

Indeed, there was the War Between the States. But you were what 10 or 11 at the time?

I would says elected officials are MORE polarized, because they only represent one faction.

Certainly improved over the 1970s. But I see little real improvement in the last decade.

The people electing them seem to feel fairly consistently.

I think it's impossible to argue that democracy - which is what you're really talking about - has greatly improved through my lifetime and will continue to improve. Technology, such as the Internet and social media, has greatly increased even casual involvement in political discussion and the airing of important issues. No longer are backroom deals so prevalent and public scrutiny of those holding political office is as great as it's ever been.

Democracy is messy and I look at the divisions in American political discourse to be a perfect example of a vibrant democracy at work. I can't help but think there's no going back and things will continue to get messier and thus better as time goes on.

About their power sure. They suffer from the same addiction there. But what about the direction of the nation?

The nation is increasingly less competitive internationally as globalization increases.
