I say yes for the simple fact we as tax payers paid for it.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

Only if they are fully-funded by public funds and then it should not matter where they are shown to be in the public domain.

I don't think copyright laws end just because the government buys or pays for the use of something. But you make a good point. If we the taxpayers are forced to fund the production of it, then we should have full access to it. Maybe just not make anything the government funds eligible for copyright? And that problem could be eliminated by returning to a concept that it is not legal for government to be using taxpayer monies in that way in the first place.

True. But a patent or copyright does not always belong to the one that paid with it alone. But you are right. It is something to think about.

    I agree.
If taxpayers paid for it, why should an individual be able to patent it? We're taxpayers. We paid for it, so it's ours.

I agree. But this sort of thing doesn't just happen in public TV. Netscape/Mozilla entirely public funded code written by and for the NCSA.

So ... what exactly do people want access to?

You mean to say that they copyrighted it even though it was paid for by public funds? That sounds like it ought to be illegal to me.

That sounds like a theft of public funds. I want my share back.
