Petraeus pleads guilty to mishandling classified material, will face probation

Petraeus pleads guilty to mishandling classified material, will face probation - The Washington Post

CHARLOTTE — David H. Petraeus, a retired general considered one of the greatest military minds of his generation, pleaded guilty Thursday to a misdemeanor charge of mishandling classified materials, ending a long-running legal saga that had threatened to send him to prison.

Petraeus, who admitted he provided the materials to his former mistress and biographer, will instead face a two-year probationary period. U.S. Magistrate Judge David Keesler also imposed a $100,000 fine — more than double the amount recommended by prosecutors — to reflect the “seriousness of the offense.”
    Was this a just sentence?
Did the DOJ, due to the information involved back away as much information would be asked for by the Defense which does cause security issues and has caused the DOJ in the past to decide not to prosecute.

Obviously deals were made, it was a plea deal.

Perhaps a deal made at a much higher level then DOJ?

This makes me wonder if Mrs. Clinton will get prosecuted for deleting classified material from her email server.....oh wait...its never even going to make it to the DA much less a plea deal being made. My bad. Never mind.

What kind of sentence would he have gotten if he had been Private Patraeus?

Re: Petraeus pleads guilty to mishandling classified material, will face probation

" David Petraeus, the former Army general and CIA director, admitted today that he gave highly-classified journals to his onetime lover and that he lied to the FBI about it. But he only has to plead guilty to a single misdemeanor that will not involve a jail sentence thanks to a deal with federal prosecutors. The deal is yet another example of a senior official treated leniently for the sorts of violations that lower-level officials are punished severely for... "

Obviously deals were made since the defendant's services are desired, at a high level (the POTUS?), to be further used. Had this same offense been committed by someone not considered vital for continued service then the sentence would be more realistic (harsh). Loose lips sink some ships while requiring only a high level bilge pump for others.

Hell no. Had he been late on child support he'd have been shot in the back.
