Is suicide cowardly?

is suicide a cowardly act?

Your linguistics continue to show a disconnect between your perception of how you come across and how you actually comes across. You never tell people this is selfish, because it only continues the stigmatization of mental illness, forcing people to hide their problems in front of others and make them feel ashamed of their depression and suicide. All the meanwhile there's little that is promoted to ensure that person has a healthier profile.

While it is always good to help others you can't merely say that they should stop wallowing in self pity and just help others. You often have to address problems in their own lives and their perceptions of self to get anywhere. The chemical imbalance issue is in reference to an existing chemical imbalance that is often corrected by medications, healthy diets, exercise, and so on.

You don't usually help the depressed and suicidal by having a cavalier attitude toward their sufferings. They often need to make sure it is addressed head on. And many times it will always be with them, coming in waves, sometimes fine for years and then a wave hits and it is with them for another period of time.

I don't think I have a problem with "linguistics" but rather some are too sensitive to take them at face value. And I hope anyone reading this thread who may have contemplated suicide take the advice to stop focusing on themselves and reach out and do for others.

Yes you do. It's incredibly basic best practices not to advocate what you are thinking.

It's not over sensitivity to point out you're treating those of us who have attempted or are thinking of attempting suicide like assholes who just needed to flip a switch.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

It would be only my feeling if there wasn't so much in the way of publications and guides out there for people to understand what is going on with depression and suicide. Spending some small amount of time in one of the numerous suicide prevention centers online or physically would educate you to the extent that you would be shown to be in the wrong.

Yours is a great suggestion! Organizations like the Food Bank, and others like them, badly need people to help them help others. And if they don't feel comfortable dealing with people, what about those groups like "no-kill" animal shelters that care of unwanted pets? Who can resist a dog that craves affection and kindness? It doesn't cost anything to give love to them, but what you get in return when you show up and see their joy in seeing you really does make life worth living. Just carrying your excellent idea further...

Evening JANFU

That's a very hard place to be......but many take their own lives because the are so wrapped up in their own pain, whether it be mental of physical. Self. One way to break through that is to start doing for others, giving yourself to those around you who are in need taking the focus off self and focus on another. You know I watched people with terminal illness which involved a need for pain medication just to tolerate it use their time that was limited, instead of ending their life because of it spent their final days giving in what capacity they could to others. It's been a great life lesson for me should I reach that point one day.

Unfortunately they cannot, may have tried, failed, but the mental pain is immense so they see no other way but death. And mental illness is one that is not discussed openly, even within many families where 1 person is seriously ill. It is a hidden shame for many, sad but true.

Suicide is about anger, rage. Uncontainable, unfiltered, seething, overboiling...with nowhere to direct it but within. Suicide is the last act of a person who has nowhere, no one, or no hope of ever being able to direct their rage and hate. It is ultimately an act of violence.

Thank you Pol. Those are great suggestions. There's a lot of folks and critters in need. And sometimes just an act of kindness makes the burden they carry a little lighter. And if you are in a place that is dark and hopeless by reaching out to help another you truly help yourself.

If not healthy to help oneself, how will one be any help to others? That gets lost in the suggestion of volunteering. Who wants to hang around a severe depressive or have them around their kids etc? Who wants to hire one? Some struggle just to get out the door, and the rejection doesn't help

Doesn't really matter if it's discussed either, as few sympathize and none understand, let alone can be of help

Interesting way to look at it, but i remember reading the #1 factor is despair. Whether that stems from a terminal illness, chronic poverty, imprisonment, or disability - those are more difficult/impossible to reverse than attitude

I suspect one has to be in great pain to take their own life and I am not going to judge that person as a coward.

I can see despair, as well. To my mind, though, those things end up linked. Hopelessness, a since of an inability to make changes, will often lead to anger and hate. Not the visible kind, with outbursts, but the kind that's focused inward, and bottled up.

I think there is a fine line between a kid who'll take his own life, and a kid who goes to school prepared to shoot it up.
That's just my personal theory, though. I have very little to prove that.

IMO many times, yes. And selfish.

However those that do so because of great pain or terminal disease are more than understandable and I wish it were easier for them to include their families...and even a medical professional...in their choice. However if they do, in most circumstances those others would be charged with breaking the law.

I personally believe anyone that commits suicide is insane.

Two of my siblings committed suicide and neither were insane. One was a victim of child sexual abuse and even as an adult, could not deal with it.

You have to remember that Navy, like many people, is just terrified of death and is reacting entirely emotionally. The only way he makes it through the day is by thinking people who disagree with his abject terror have something wrong with them. He can't accept that someone with nothing wrong with them would choose to end their own life for any reason.
