My sons go to school at 9 am. If we stayed on DST year round, there is a good possibility that during nov/dec/jan they could be walking to school in the dark or as the sun is coming up. Just going at 8 would put many students in the dark.

it is ridiculous to have it daylight till 9:30 in mid summer and 5:30 in mid winter.

Put it all back on Standard time is my preference, but at least quit this oscillation back and forth

so drive them or let them ride the bus. we shouldn't all have to engage in an utterly pointless and useless ritual twice a year just because somebody won't find alternate means of getting their kids to school.

We participate in all sorts of things that are pointless. This isn't really that big of a deal. And I was pointing out a possible reason people might prefer standard time to DST. Changing times isn't a big deal to me personally either way.

i'm fine with standard time or DST. i probably would prefer permanent DST, so set the clocks an hour ahead permanently.

or let them ride the bus.
Actually I think that's one of the big reasons they give for not having DST in the winter. Kids in the country standing on these dark rural roads waiting for their buses in the pitch black. In cities I doubt it matters much, but outside the cities, and especially rural areas it could be dangerous.

A thousand times yes, and a pox on Woodrow Wilson for it coming up in the first place.

In a way, I can see it making sense in the past when lighting was likely the primary electrical cost for any family.

That's just not the case anymore. Between CFL's and LED's pulling down a fraction of the amount of energy that traditional bulbs do, and with the ever increasing amount of electronis in a home (TV's, cable boxes, computers, routers, microwaves, video game systems, phone charges, etc), it's likely that lighting as a portion of our electric bills is probably at the smallest percentage in decades if ever.

Any advantage it may've gave in the past regarding the electrical grid and electric bills is likely miniscule any longer.

Get rid of the blastard thing.
Imagine if Walmart owned access to all the streets in your town. You can go to Target or the mom and pop downtown if you want, but all the roads leading there require a toll, whereas the roads leading to Walmart are free. That is not the avenue the internet needs to go down.

Woodrow Wilson? Figures. Leave it to a liberal to change something that does not need to be changed.

IMHO a more important but related topic is should telecommuting; working and attending school from home with the use of technology (computer networking, etc.) be tax incentivized? Kids won't be on the streets in darkness before the sun rises to get to school. Energy needed to power buildings would be reduced. Fewer cars would be on the roads and thus reduced gasoline consumption and other transportation costs.
