Things are being done in the House and Senate that's never been done before now. Should the Senators that sent the letter to Iran, be punished for this acted against Obama, and the country?

Seriously. This is the dumbest thing I have seen the GOP do yet. But I am prepared to see them top this one. Full steam ahead.

Some fairly sharp legal minds signed that letter, and I sincerely doubt they would hang themselves and their colleagues out to dry for mere political theater. It was a low-brow maneuver from a political standpoint, but it's neither unprecedented nor illegal.

Senators and Congressmen act in the best interest of the people they represent (theoretically). They do not have to act in Obama's best interest, not are they subservient to the executive branch.

I am aware of no section of the United States code that makes it a crime to act against Obama.

What they did was not illegal so no they will not be punished for it

"...a treason acted"? Huh?

That simply isnt true, this has happened a few times before mostly by democrats

They will get their punishment, and/or rewards, in future elections.

I was pretty offended until I actually read the letter. Explaining the treaty process is little more than a Jr. High School Civics lesson.

There is no such crime as “treason against Obama”. Treason is the only crime that is actually defined as such in the Constitution itself. Nothing about the Senators having signed this letter has anything whatsoever to do with the definition of treason.

Now, Obama, on the other hand, has use the power of his office to take the side of invading foreign criminals, against that of this country and its people. That does meet the definition of treason, and if this nation truly cared about the rule of law, he would be removed from office, tried, and either put in prison for a very, very, very long time, or else be put to death.

It has been done before and there is nothing illegal about it. It's just that memories are short when it comes to partisan bickering.

It's not illegal, but the GOP just handed the Dems an unbelievable electoral cudgel. What a breathtakingly stupid maneuver.

Yeah, yeah, the usual "traitor" crap.

By no reasonable definition do illegal immigrants constitute an invading army or an enemy. But please, continue to piss into the wind. It's amusing.

Too bad they ****ed up explaining the treaty process.

I think most of us can agree that this GOP letter to Iran was an extremely unwise move. But treason, no.

What? You disagree with something the GOP did? Who could have seen that coming? Actually the letter was completely accurate. Whatever Obama does bypassing Congress, can just be undone by the next president.

Didnt people say that about the govt shutdown, people have short memories this is way to far from the election to matter and has much less actual effect than the shutdown did

Teddy did it, Nixon did it, Reagan did it. This brand of GOP idiots just made it public.

The criticism here is going to go right down the party line. I'm fine with trying to undermine an extremely bad idea and you'll go to the mat defending Obama no matter what. Well, he wants to cut Congress out of the loop with his phone and pen, fine, but he really then has no basis to whine about doing and end run around him.

Wrong again.

I think some believe that making a deal with Iran that supports their ability to develop nukes is a really popular idea in the US. It's not.

The only people I've seen upset about this are liberals (whom I suspect are rather ready for the headlines to shift away from Hillary's email servers)

But here is the text of the letter:

It has come to our attention while observing your nuclear negotiations with our government that you may not fully understand our constitutional system. Thus, we are writing to bring to your attention two features of our Constitution—the power to make binding international agreements and the different character of federal offices—which you should seriously consider as negotiations progress.

First, under our Constitution, while the president negotiates international agreements, Congress plays the significant role of ratifying them. In the case of a treaty, the Senate must ratify it by a two-thirds vote. A so-called congressional-executive agreement requires a majority vote in both the House and the Senate (which, because of procedural rules, effectively means a three-fifths vote in the Senate). Anything not approved by Congress is a mere executive agreement.

Second, the offices of our Constitution have different characteristics. For example, the president may serve only two 4-year terms, whereas senators may serve an unlimited number of 6-year terms. As applied today, for instance, President Obama will leave office in January 2017, while most of us will remain in office well beyond then—perhaps decades.

What these two constitutional provisions mean is that we will consider any agreement regarding your nuclear-weapons program that is not approved by the Congress as nothing more than an executive agreement between President Obama and Ayatollah Khamenei. The next president could revoke such an executive agreement with the stroke of a pen and future Congresses could modify the terms of the agreement at any time.

We hope this letter enriches your knowledge of our constitutional system and promotes mutual understanding and clarity as nuclear negotiations progress.

Please feel free to point out to us the parts that you feel are particularly controversial.
