Having said that, the circus has become an anachronism, it's been replaced by Circ Du Sole which puts on quality human entertainment and major concert tours in which performers like Pink fly by wire all over arenas and Tommy Lee plays drums on a roller coaster. Disband the circus altogether, and quit using wild animals as props. It's not entertaining.
I know exactly what PETA does to the companion animals they take in to their care. I've posted about it many times before. HSUS is nowhere near the scale of PETA, but I don't support or work for any animal rescue that is part of the big bureaucracy groups, like HSUS, PETA and the ASPCA. That['s why I encourage people to donate to their local rescues and breed rescues as well as their local shelters.

PETA isn't my favorite organization and I have a lot of issues with some of their tactics as well as some of their conclusions. In this example they were spot on, and that's been known for years. There are many groups and individuals who work hard to help these elephants, including Bob Barker (who has personally funded the rescue and rehoming of some elephants), Cleveland Amory's charity "The Fund For Animals", and some others. I've worked an elephant rescue and I'm here to tell you, I can cry at the drop of a hat thinking about what I saw, and what people do to these creatures. There is absolutely no upside to using elephants for human entertainment whatsoever.

Interestingly enough, the movie "Born Free", while not about elephants, raised a lot of new awareness about the plight of elephants and other animals from Africa and Asia.
Hi Tres, as I stated there are good trainers and bad ones. I don't believe all elephants are mistreated by their trainers . Here's one who died recently who spent his life training animals and started at the age of 6 helping his father train elephants. The man was known for his love of animals especially elephants, horses, zebras and dogs.

I do know that some special interest groups have managed to have circuses banned from their cities over the elephant abuses recorded and some just find the practice of training animals to perform appalling and offends their sensitivities. That's unfortunate for all good and humane animal trainers.

Animals like these should not be confined for human amusement but rather place in as natural habitat as possible.

Elephants weren't made for circuses. They should not be performing in circuses. There is not one positive thing that comes from it. A lot of people spend their lives training elephants. They profess to do it with love. There is no love in making them perform. It is in direct opposition with their world and their societal requirements, not to mention physically taxing.

Not even close. Best guess is they put about 2600 animals to sleep each year. It's far too many, but it's nowhere close to the 3-4 million who die in shelters each year, or the hundreds of thousands who die outside of shelters, intentionally or because of neglect.

a little hyperbole, but they have a dismal not kill record, 90+ percent they take in are killed.

Eventually circuses and zoos will be the last 'safe' place for many of the worlds great creatures.

There's my answer. The time when the circus was even mildly interesting passed before I was born. It's just a place to fleece the town's folk.
