Fox affiliate suspends anchor for three days for use of the word Jigaboo

You can read about that story here:

Ohio news anchor taken off air after Lady Gaga remarks | Cincinnati

Now personally I had not heard the word and I am not sure masses of people in America would have heard that word used too many times either.

But I looked it up and it is a disparaging and offensive word for a black person

She was describing music made by Lady Gaga and sitting next to a black co-anchor when she said:

“It’s hard to really hear her voice with all that jigaboo music — whatever you want to call it — jigaboo!”

Now she has since apologized sincerely for her words but still, was it right for her employer to suspend her?

I like how you put "Fox" in the title as a way to tickle the ears of those who love to hate it.

I honestly thought that jigaboo was something you said to babies to stop them from crying.

I picked # 2 though as I posted on another thread, my gut instinct is that she was going for another word--maybe boogie woogie-- on the fly, trying to be colorful/light-hearted and just spat out the word like a brain fart.

The reason is very simple, a lot of news stories started with:

    Fox affiliate .......

Being affiliated with Fox says nothing about local anchors I would think and as this is not a political but racially sensitive issue, who cares for whom she works. If she had been working for MSNBC affiliate says......., my story would have started with "MSNBC affiliate suspends anchor etc. etc..

Words like Nigger are being reapropriated in use by the black community and becoming part of a new social lingo again.

So I bet in 20 years these words will no longer be considered offensive.

I think she couldn't find the right word and came up with jigabooo somewhat accidentally. It showed lack of skill at her job rather than intentional racism. It may be a symptom of suppressed racism.

Sure, that could be but coming to a word that happens to means a derisive slur against a black person is a strange thing to happen. Maybe it just says something about the community she grew up in?

This is America and over here we believe that every white person is born racist and, as such, must be punished for the misdeeds of their great, great, great grandparents.

The woman in question had no idea what she was saying and while a rational person would take that as an indication that racism in our society has waned greatly over the past 50 years there is still a rather large faction that needs to perpetuate the concept of racism to justify their own political and sociological ends. It is those people who demand "justice" for any and all perceived slight against a person of color.

I believe she didn't know what it meant but I think a three day suspension is just fine. When your job is to communicate for a living you should know the meaning of the words you choose to use on air. I certainly don't think she should be fired.
