Can watching and listening to much news make you feel depressed?

there was a time i used to keep my ears pinned to the news listening to what was going on all over the world and at home.

i noticed i began to feel and think in a negative ways towards people i know and the outside world around me, that i cut my news watching down to only a small amount and focus more on activities which has made me feel better, be a more mellow person, and use far less foul language in regular conversation.

p.s. could not get the poll working for me.

    No news is good news.

For me news is kind of like sport. How about that humiliating Kiev retreat from Debaltseve.

Maybe, depends. It might also cheer you up if you're focused too much on feeling bad about your own circumstances giving you the opportunity to realize it could be worse and is worse for some people.

actually things for me are not bad at all, but watching it day to day, problems after problems, is to me a downer and seeing other people in a bad way does not make me feel better about myself.

You better be careful. If you stop watching that mindbender box, you might start thinking like me. Use the Internet. Google for real news. Learn to use keywords to get info on any and all subjects. If it will make you feel better, there is probably much less starvation in the world than 50 years ago. Less disease, even if some diseases are more dangerous. The problem is always the people who want to control the world, instead of seeking a stable planet.

Re: Can watching and listening to much news make you feel depressed?

When CNN first started 24 hour news coverage (yes, I know that dates me), I got addicted to watching news all day long...even left it on as background when I was doing other things. It definitely made me get depressed, and once I realized that it was the constant (mostly bad) news was what was causing my depression, I quit watching CNN. I rarely watch any TV news anymore. I read most of my news online now, and often just scan headlines. I'm no longer depressed...most of the time. I realize more now than I did then, though...like what little I do have control over is pretty much just normal stuff that we can all control on a daily basis. I no longer think I can personally change the world.

Re: Can watching and listening to much news make you feel depressed?

I never watch TV news, I never pay the slightest attention to for-profit news sources, they only care about drawing a crowd so they can sell advertising. Honestly, the news doesn't depress me very often, it's people who talk about the news, people who are clueless idiots, who depress me more.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

I think so. I still like to be aware, but have found that I need to "pace myself", if you will.
If you claim sexual harassment to be wrong, yet you defend anyone on your side for any reason,
then you are a hypocrite and everything you say on the matter is just babble.

I understand what you're saying. There are some days I just can't turn the news on because it's so damn depressing. Then there are other days I'm glued to it, like in the days immediately preceding elections. I also sometimes watch the news if I'm feeling down for some silly reason, because then it makes me realize that my life is pretty good because I inevitably see someone whose life is just so bad.
