News for 2015-02-07 | Common Dreams | Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community a security conference in Munich on Saturday, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) vigorously pressed for more western military backing of Ukraine and escalation towards Russia, openly clashing with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and pointing towards a deepening transatlantic rift over strategy.Addressing the conference on Saturday, Merkel declared, "I cannot imagine any situation in which improved equipment for the Ukrainian army leads to President Putin being so impressed that he believes he will lose militarily. I have to put it that bluntly.""I understand the debate but I believe that more weapons will not lead to the progress Ukraine needs," added Merkel, who has pressed for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis.Graham lashed back at the chancellor, accusing her of turning her back on struggling ally Ukraine, as paraphrased by Reuters."At the end of the day, to our European friends, this is not working," said Graham. "You can go to Moscow until you turn blue in the face. Stand up to what is clearly a lie and a danger."Nato's top military commander, US Air Force general Philip Breedlove, also urged the conference to consider military escalation. I too have thought about the possibility or more like... fact - that there are many Americans who are trying to draw the US into a major confrontation in order to fatten their pockets. Their foot soldiers being the average American fat ass who hasn't lifted a weight in decades but wants to fight them rushkies and muslums. What is more terrifying is that there are politicians on both sides of the aisle working together to make the US a state embroiled in permanent war. I don't think the politicians doing this are doing it out of anything other than ideology but the combined actions of all these people are going to make a lot of people incredibly rich.

Wars and corruption do indeed make some people very rich. Vladimir Putin is reputed to be one of the richest people in the world ($70+ billion). He certainly didn't accrue this fortune as President of the Russian Federation with an annual salary of $200,000.

Ownership is hidden in blind trusts and shell companies. The property is protected by the FSB (Russian Security Service)

If you do not have supporting documentation, then it is simply not true.

Do you deny that Putin is a billionaire?

I honestly don't know. In the Russian economic morass after the collapse of the Soviet Union
lots of people made billions, perhaps even Putin.

I don't know why we would. Russia isn't attacking us. Maybe the answer is in all the text in the OP but that's too much for me to read right now.

Does the USA need war for business and employment? Poll Question

It is no longer the case that war helps our employment and business. We no longer manufacture the steel and components of weapons and such. It comes with a huge price tag that adds to the deficit. It leaves us with untold numbers of wounded and psychologically damaged vets, which is harmful to them and their families, decreases their productivity for the rest of their lives (which affects our economy), and costs a ton of money.

The Iraq War didn't help our economy. It hurt it.

Whatever happened to supporting allies?

War never helps the taxpaying citizen. We are the cannon fodder. War does help BAE, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Academis, Raytheon, GE, Westinghouse, Haliburton, all Big energy Corporations (wars run on energy), Banks, etc., or the status quo of the entrenched MIC that does not vote. These are the Corporations that SCOTUS gave permission to buy all the politicians they can afford, because the poor things can'f vote, but it's OK to buy votes. Who bought your Congressperson today?

Well, tonight, French President Hollande and German Chancellor Merkel take one last effort to find a peaceful solution together with Ukrainian President Poroshenko and Russian President Putin in Minsk.

Observers say that if this attempt fails, even Merkel and Hollande wouldn't oppose weapon deliveries to Ukraine anymore.

This, of course, may just be the excuse Russia needs to openly start a war against Ukraine (instead of just supporting the seperatists). The entire conflict might escalate and it's hard to predict where this would lead to.

On the other side, just watching Russia win cannot be an option.

Whatever happened to supporting allies?

Are the lives of our "allies" worth more than the lives of our fellow Americans or are the lives of our fellow Americans worth more than the lives of our "allies"?

They arent suggesting we go to war with Russia. They are suggesting we provide resources to an ally to give them a fighting chance. They didnt say start world war three, they said dont take military options off the table.

But as for the military defense of allies...yeah...thats what happens when you form an alliance like NATO. You agree to stand alongside people you consider allies. If you dont have the balls to stand behind your allies, then admit it and crawl back into a little ****ing hole and surrender any credibility.

Which translates into provoking Russia and thus going to war with Russia.

They didnt say start world war three, they said dont take military options off the table.

Translation as they were getting the military industrial complex's wiener out of their mouths they said slurp slurp cough cough we want more war.

I never agreed to defend these people.I never agreed to butt into the affairs of other countries. I never agreed to the put the lives of those people above the lives of ou own countrymen. Perhaps you should call the assholes who made that agreement.Let them go send themselves and their sons and daughter to go die for the citizens of some other country.

Ignore your allies, roll over, and be a little bitch for them then. No way that can have long term negative repercussions.

Verses supporting a country that had a coup and is currently in a civil war?

The same kind of "civil war" that Putin engineered in Georgia (Abkhazia/Ossetia) and Moldova (Transdniester). The only thing that changes are the names. Wake up.

A civil war that occurred after the coup. Putin did not engineer that.

Ukraine is none of our business.

Ukraine is none of our business.

Where you are right is that Putin was rather angry that Yanukovych fled before the rebelling demonstrators. One hears he would have preferred the military to quash the unrest. That was his preference in Syria also. So it would sound true to MO.

But grabbing land is also quite natural to his reflex repertoire. The Russians have been an an aggressively expansive imperial power for centuries and he trained in the old school.

That is a rather silly assumption and creed in certain circles. Here in Germany you here it all the time. It has no predictive value, I have found.

PS: Merkel is following her own career goals. But it is true that the German people are very badly educated in international security studies and that this could be a real world problem.

Well if these pics are indeed russian military in ukraine as we speak, it looks like they aren't waiting for an 'excuse'. I don't know what to make of its authenticity, but everything russia has done to this point is completely insane to me.

It's like these warmongering assholes learned nothing from the cuban missile crisis. A serious invasion would compel the rest of europe to get involved directly, unless those leaders want to just cross their fingers that putin isn't such an egomaniac as to invade their countries as well

All i have to say re: the OP is it's a damn good thing cheyney and bush II aren't in charge here now
