Should the U.S. government tell a specific religion what they can teach?

Should the U.S. government tell a specific religion what they can teach?

Some appear to feel that the U.S. government has the right to single out Islam and say specifically what it can and cannot teach. Should the government be allowed to single out a specific religion in this way?

You have provided zero links, sources, or facts to back any of this up. Who is telling only islam they can't teach something but allowing all the other religions to do it? I can only assume you're referring to the "hey assholes, don't incite violence" advisory that applies to every citizen in the country.

OK. That complaint has been stated. Here is something that I posted earlier that illustrates the problem:

It is therefore time for the United States to make our true intentions clear. This barbaric ideology will no longer be tolerated. Islam must change or we will facilitate its self-destruction.

That is what Lt. General Matthew Dooley was teaching at the Joint Forces Staff College.

I had a notion today. I have been trying to figure out why the leadership of IS appears to be engaging in the type of activity that assures it's destruction. But I think I may have found a possible explanation

Damn! That would be deep.

The best thing to do is to take religion out of it. Any person encouraging violence should be arrested, Muslims included. Simples.

To go on and on about so-called 'radical Islam' the way that the hysteriacs at Fox News do creates a McCarthyist environment and demonizes all Muslims. The best thing is to take religion out of it.

Fox News didn't invent the term "radical Islam." To these fanatics, it is about the religion, so you can't separate it from them.

But I prefer Daniel Pipes' term, "Islamism," because it calls it for what it is:

Islamism is an ideology that demands man's complete adherence to the sacred law of Islam and rejects as much as possible outside influence, with some exceptions (such as access to military and medical technology). It is imbued with a deep antagonism towards non-Muslims and has a particular hostility towards the West. It amounts to an effort to turn Islam, a religion and civilization, into an ideology.

No, the government shouldn't nor can tell a specific religion what they can teach. The question in this thread is akin to the threads asking "should the government force churchs to perform same sex marriages", both in it's answer and relevance.

Pretty simple: NO. Nor should any other government for that matter.

You don't think it is relevant? It appears to me that there are some who actually want the government to demand that Islam change it's ideology. I tried to give an example of that kind of thinking in the U.S. military.

My first thought was the Mormon church teaching polygamy. The govt can't tell the Mormon church what to teach or not teach. The govt's area is over BEHAVIOR. They cannot act on those teachings, if the behavior is against the law.

So....an Islamic leader can teach sharia law. But the Islamists cannot PRACTICE it, if it against the law.

I agree. Behavior is what we can observe and should remain the point of focus, not religious ideology.

Agreed, provided that recruiting people or calling on them to commit terrorism falls under "behavior" too.

Not what they can teach but they ought to be held accountable for what they actually do teach.

I believe the U.S. should become officially a Christian nation.

Because it's proven in its ability to unify and the ideas are battle tested over hundreds of years

Why cant it be something like our secular constitution? I think its done a fine job.

Has it? If the Russians paid me a good sum, I would probably spy for them. I have zero loyalty to this country. That's because I know it's a sham, the constitution is a weak document, and we don't actually live in a democratic or a free society.

Well thats not very patriotic of you... What makes you think if our constitution says "The official religion of the USA is Christianity" is going to make more people loyal?

People are feverishly loyal toward religion

Thats entirely not true at all. I am proof of that, millions of Americans are proof of that, millions of this worlds citizens are proof of that.

People are feverishly loyal toward religion

That's not remotely true, lots of people leave religion and change religions every day. More properly, lots of people are fanatically and irrationally attached to religion. That's not something to be proud of.
