I don't accept one or the other.

And in doing so, you indicate that Kyle's obviously false claim is "possibly true". This does not do Kyle's memory any good.

I dont know, are any of the following claims by Kyle in his book?:

- I killed thirty looters during Hurricane Katrina

-I killed two car jackers outside of Dallas, Texas. Once I identified myself as a SEAL on special duties, the cops gave me a "wink and a nod", then let me walk away

- I heard Jesse Ventura disrespecting the President in general, and SEALS in particular. I then punched him out and went on with my business.

-While leaving for deployment, I wallked past hoards of "baby killer" protesters at the San Diego airport *

At the end of the day, Kyle was both a hero and a "teller of fish tales". Being a teller of "fish tales" does not negate his heroism. It just means that blind and total acceptance of anybody is not a good idea.

*Possibly could have happened, but nobody else, either military, nor civilian, seems to remember the "Baby Killer" protesters at the airport in conservative San Diego.
Good post. Its sad that both Kyle and Williams, both men of accomplishment, felt the need to embellish their own credentials. Not sure what the psychological need behind this sort of behavior is, but it is probably no different than when you or I stretch the truth. It tarnishes both men, but not fatally. Kyle is still a hero and Williams should be able to go on reading the news. In Williams case (since Kyle is dead) the public will decide if they wish to continue to watch him deliver the news. But I suspect everyone will raise an eyebrow next time he begins a sentence with "I remember the time I..."

Obviously false how?

Nobody can prove a negative (Prove Kyle did not kill 30 looters from the Superdome).

Why not accept the fact that Kyle was a hero who told a few fish tales?

Good points. The tendency to embellish might be something innate in all males, and espescially in type A males. Though I am not a type A personality, I remember embellishing a threatning situation that I encountered in Africa to my wife:

I automatically described rocks being thrown at us by a hostile crowd. I then related that I was not afraid (of course not) because I had cooly analyzed the trajectories and could see that the rocks would fall short and that the crowd could not get closer because of fence.

In actuality, we got some dirty looks and the small crowd was frustrated with life in general, not hostile to us per se. While some people had stones in their hands and made gestures as if to throw them at us (we were out of range of thrown rocks anyways), nobody actually threw any.

As to why I automatically added the embelishments, I have no idea.

Personally, I'm growing weary of what I call "faux internet outrage". I was not, and am not, aware of the original incident, but I did see his apology last night. For what it was worth, I thought he came off as sincere. I swear we have lost all sense of objective empathy in our society.

But I guess I'm the only one. Which is ok with me, because from what I can tell I have no desire to be part of the "in crowd". My sense of self is not so shallow. Sometimes the majority opinion is indeed correct, but it's surprising how often the minority view is the one that turns out being correct.
Ok, I was incorrect on this one. After further review I now believe he should be fired (if he doesn't resign voluntarily).

I still stand by my generic feeling that we as a society needs to regain some empathy for our fellow people. Not everything scandalous truly is. This one was/is, though.

I say yes! What a freakin liar! How can anyone believe a word he says now? The man has lost all credibility.

NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams last night had to make the humiliating admission that he was not aboard a helicopter hit by RPG fire during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, a false claim that he made and was repeated by the network for years.

Williams — who’d claimed he was in a chopper forced down by a rocket-propelled grenade 12 years ago — repeated the story on Friday’s newscast during a tribute for a retired sergeant major.

“The story actually started with a terrible moment a dozen years back during the invasion of Iraq, when the helicopter we were traveling in was forced down after being hit by an RPG,” Williams said on Friday’s show. “Our traveling NBC News team was rescued, surrounded and kept alive by an armor-mechanized platoon from the US Army 3rd Infantry.”

He was busted when vet Lance Reynolds commented on the “Nightly News” Facebook page, where the clip was posted, “Sorry, dude, I don’t remember you being on my aircraft. I do remember you walking up about an hour after we had landed to ask me what had happened.”

Amid a vicious ratings battle with ABC’s “World News Tonight,” which has positioned anchor David Muir as an equally strong on-the-scene reporter, Williams, who has a $10 million-a-year deal with NBC, made an embarrassing apology.

He claimed on Facebook that he had confused events: “I spent much of the weekend thinking I’d gone crazy. I feel terrible about making this mistake.” Stars and Stripes, which broke the story, reported that a different Chinook was hit by rockets and “the NBC anchor was nowhere near that aircraft . . . Williams arrived in the area about an hour later on another helicopter.”

You, and most others, seem to be under the impression that he made a false claim in a news story. He embellished a PERSONAL story as a guest on a talk show.

He's a broadcaster and reads the news reports he's fed. I don't think he writes the news stories.

This seems like an embellishment of a story, not a total falsity. But regardless, it wasn't part of, or during, his news show or the news. He got carried away on a talk show, maybe. No big deal to me. He should not be fired.

If it turns out there are other embellishments or false stories, personal or not, he should be fired, since that would mean he has a problem, and his reputation would tank. They need someone with a good reputation of being reliable. One personal story embellishment doesn't affect his reputation much, to me.

Well, he's gone for 6 months. Maybe they can replace him with somebody non-partisan, and completely unbiased and truthful, like maybe Rush Limbaugh, or better yet, Ann Coulter.

Nah. I'm sure they can find someone with similar qualifications within their own news division.

Oh looky, another utterly worthless poll being spammed by libs, supporting yet another lib liar. I'm shocked, SHOCKED I TELL YA!!!

Well I would say that Kyle while a military hero was also most likely a pathological liar. Brian Williams may be or may not be, but I think that if you are a borderline pathological liar, reporting the news is probably not the career you were made for.

And the deflection card is played.

Our maybe it is the career one was made for?... Ummm

There is talk the Rev Al Sharpton is being considered as a possible replacement.

I feel sorry for Williams...but yeah, he should probably be fired. The only thing a news journalist has is their credibility and once that's gone..... Although, I am a believer in second chances and don't think he would try that stunt again.....at this point he's probably more of a liability to the network than an asset, so perhaps letting the dust settle for six months is worth a try to see if the public will accept him again. If not, then he should probably find a new career.

He shouldnt need to be fired

He should have resigned

This is a no brainer as far as i am concerned

He has lost the trust of his viewers, and rightfully so

My father was a Cronkite fan.....said he really didnt like the man personally, but he always trusted whatever came out of his mouth

That is what your news anchor should be.....someone that you never have to guess about whether or not you trust what they are saying

When all else fails make personal attacks. SOP for liberals.

How is that a personal attack when it's the truth? The fact remains that you are, in fact, a criminal, who derived his money from nefarious means. If you've made enough money from this venture to live on comfortably, then it clearly has reached felony level, and convicted felons do not have the right to vote. You were never caught, and never convicted, which means you were lucky. Therefore, my statement, "You are lucky you can even vote" was not a personal attack, but more of a statement made based on information given by you.

So tell me again how what I said is a personal attack?

Not my call (obviously) as I'm not senior management at NBC.

If I WAS senior management there, and the decision was up to me, he would be relieved of his duties as anchor, but not necessarily fired. I would probably give him a new assignment that isn't so plum as the one he has, and I would definitely adjust his salary to account for the downgrade.
I say transfer him to The Weather Channel, he gets a forecast wrong, no biggie.

The subject is should Brian be Fired but instead you want to talk about me and your fantasies about my past life. You are a soap opera watcher aren't you.

Believe me, I have no fantasies whatsoever about you or your past life. And I have teenage daughters. I have more than enough drama in my life, so no, I do not watch soap operas.

I don't know if he should be fired or not but does this surprise anybody really?
This is what happens when news is about ratings and profits and they (news orgs) decided to make that change quite some times ago and we (the people) let them and will continue to let them.

Aren't the two highest rated news orgs MSNBC and FOX? That's all the proof you need, both those stations are completely full of **** hahahaha
