But she insisted that lying just helps one appear more human. ;)

In politics (and now the press?) image is everything and the truth is not nearly so important.

How far the society has fallen in their acceptable behavior standards. Really quite amazing and quite disturbing at the same time.

Personally, I'm growing weary of what I call "faux internet outrage". I was not, and am not, aware of the original incident, but I did see his apology last night. For what it was worth, I thought he came off as sincere. I swear we have lost all sense of objective empathy in our society.

But I guess I'm the only one. Which is ok with me, because from what I can tell I have no desire to be part of the "in crowd". My sense of self is not so shallow. Sometimes the majority opinion is indeed correct, but it's surprising how often the minority view is the one that turns out being correct.

I'd demote him off the anchor desk, but not fired.

I can appreciate your position and generally speaking, when people sincerely apologize for a mistake or error in judgement I'm willing to accept and move on. But I have to say that it would be impossible for me to remember being shot down in a helicopter and then rescued by soldiers if it never happened. That's not a mistake or an error, that's a blatant fabrication for the sole purpose of gaining prestige and/or credibility that is undeserved. This requires far more than a simple apology, but in today's society, integrity is often hard to find. It reminds me of a time when politicians, when caught in a lie or misbehaving, immediately resigned their seat/position and sought forgiveness after falling on their sword. They didn't seek forgiveness while clinging to office like a rat to a log in a raging river.

I just don't care at all.

Hmm... that reminds me of another war story that was fabricated:

All of us have said stupid things on occasion. It just seems ironic that she should get a pass, but Williams should be fired? C'mon! What's the difference in the stories - they were both fabricated, but Williams isn't contemplating running for President!

Maybe he needed to get people to stop talking about his slut daughter.

Williams lied telling his combat story.
Clint Eastwood lied telling Kyle's.

So what?

Combat sucks.
Let the liars have their fun making **** up.
It makes such an entertaining yarn.

Fair points, and I cannot disagree with anything you say.

Maybe this isn't the right incident to take issue with, but I am growing weary of everybody acting all :scared: over everything that comes down the line. Especially when, if you pay attention to some people long enough, you notice they're quick to have some spin ready when they do similar things. I will admit that this has been grating on me more than usual in the past several weeks.

And thank you for the rational response. It is most appreciated.

Yet... he may be an ideal candidate for Hillary's WH press secretary though. ;)

She may need considerable help in "misremembernig" quite a few things.

Yes, he's a reporter who outright deliberately lied while reporting on a story about a war. It was such an extreme lie we know he would lie about anything.

Stretching ones cred in things like this is as American as apple pie served by mom on the Fourth of July wearing a red white and blue apron. It reminds me of the of story about an incoming snowstorm and people rush to the gas stations to fill up. A woman is waiting in a long line to pay for gas and she hears another woman in front of her say to another customer

"they say we should expect nine to ten inches."

Without hesitating the other woman says "they always say nine to ten inches and it turns out to be half of that".

Suspend Williams for a week.

How did it take 12 years for people to call him out on this? The story has been repeated over the years and it only now turns out he totally embellished on the story. Whatever... And his apology was hilarious. You don't get confused whether or not your chopper was hit.

Yeah, I don't really care if he gets fired or not. My guess is he won't be fired unless it starts affecting ratings.

I say, who cares? His work as a news anchor is fine. He screwed up a story about himself, nobody was killed in the process, he admitted it. It's just an interesting footnote in the history of the mainstream media.

I'm getting a little tired in the days of social media, where everyone has the opportunity to butt into the lives of others, calls for action against people who are really strangers. I also think tweeting for social causes, as if tweeting bring back our girls, was going to influence Boko Haram, is a sign of a mental disorder. News flash, nobody cares and it's not important.

If he were a guy at a local bar spinning yarns, I would agree with you, but he is not. He should be terminated.

Ridiculous lie and low class to try and capitalize on a harrowing event of soldiers to puff up your own credentials. And the excuse for what happened is laughably dumb.

But I can't really care less if he gets fired or not. I don't watch the NBC nightly news and I have no clue how good he is or isn't as an anchor. Does it bring his credability into question with his reporting? Absolutely. Does that mean he should be fired? Not my call really. I'm not really into the whole "social justice warrior" thing and being a social media activist screaming that this person or that person or group should be boycotted or fired or whatever.

Does it make me less likely to listen to him? Yeah, though that's not saying much since I've never really watched his show in the first place. So I'm really sure how my feelings on it somehow are an indication he should be fired.

I don't think he should get fired. It's dumb, he's rightfully humiliated, but that's more than enough. Unless he was profiting off the lie or the lie hurt someone else I don't think it crosses over to the firing threshold.

Exactly! This is not like he lied about a fish he caught, he never went fishing and he's claiming the state record! So full of **** this Brian Williams, no he shouldn't be the face of NBC news.

I agree Arc, that apology was freaking funny. They played it on The View earlier (I don't normally watch it but I turned the TV on when I was folding laundry and it was on), and even Rosie O'Donnell said his apology was a joke.

Williams isn't sorry he did it. He's sorry he got caught. Good for the military people for calling him out on that lie.

It's NBC so he'll probably get a raise.
