    Should Brian Williams be fired
i'm a bit biased on this one because i like nightly news better than the others, but man, did he step in it. i'd like to know the backstory here. did he make that up on his own? was he advised to make the story more dramatic by superiors? that would be important to know. he could be screwed, though.

NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams last night had to make the humiliating admission that he was not aboard a helicopter hit by RPG fire during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, a false claim that he made and was repeated by the network for years.

Williams — who’d claimed he was in a chopper forced down by a rocket-propelled grenade 12 years ago — repeated the story on Friday’s newscast during a tribute for a retired sergeant major.

“The story actually started with a terrible moment a dozen years back during the invasion of Iraq, when the helicopter we were traveling in was forced down after being hit by an RPG,” Williams said on Friday’s show. “Our traveling NBC News team was rescued, surrounded and kept alive by an armor-mechanized platoon from the US Army 3rd Infantry.”

He was busted when vet Lance Reynolds commented on the “Nightly News” Facebook page, where the clip was posted, “Sorry, dude, I don’t remember you being on my aircraft. I do remember you walking up about an hour after we had landed to ask me what had happened.”

Amid a vicious ratings battle with ABC’s “World News Tonight,” which has positioned anchor David Muir as an equally strong on-the-scene reporter, Williams, who has a $10 million-a-year deal with NBC, made an embarrassing apology.

He claimed on Facebook that he had confused events: “I spent much of the weekend thinking I’d gone crazy. I feel terrible about making this mistake.” Stars and Stripes, which broke the story, reported that a different Chinook was hit by rockets and “the NBC anchor was nowhere near that aircraft . . . Williams arrived in the area about an hour later on another helicopter.”

If the stories about this are correct he should be out the door.

I'm a free market guy all the way figure that if someone decides he's worth hanging on to then let them hang on to him. The way I see it is if you're on a ship that's sinking and choose to hang on to the anchor instead of the life boat then more power to you.

    maybe..

But it is not your call. It is the call of his employer....not someone who wants him censored because he disagrees.

If this is correct, he has committed what this journalist considers a heinous crime, he has damaged the reputation of his employer, the media and the profession. As a journalist I would pursue this story to the deepest depths, a full throttle investigation over every story he has ever covered. But then I operate on rules we have here....

From what I have seen of the US media, this is no big thing. Fox, MSNBC, CNN all have so-called reporters and commentators lying through their teeth, so why should he be singled out?

Re: Should Brian Williams be fired

No he shouldn't be fired in my opinion. He will need the rest of his career to make up for such a blatant lie.... everyone makes mistakes - even conscious mistakes like lying about an RPG . However, one would think that Brian would have had Hillary's 1996 lie about being in sniper fire in Bosnia to learn from. Perhaps he was on drugs at the time.
“I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what’s being proposed here, he’d agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute.” - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.

    Or not.

From this perspective this isn't so new.....
