Political Leaning
Libertarian - Right
When filling out my Bio, I wanted to list my accurate political lean. I am not slightly conservative, but I am more Republican than a centrist. Political tests put me at "right-leaning centrist". However, my right-leaning views aren't really conservative, more general Republicanism. I'm a social liberal too.

What do you guys think? Could we add the choice "slightly Republican"?

I always struggle with my "lean". I feel your pain.

I'm fiscally very conservative.
I'm socially moderate.
I mostly vote for the Republican candidate.
I often vote for the Democratic candidate.
I sometimes vote for the Libertarian candidate.

I'm a mess.

This thread would probably be better placed in the "Feedback" section since this would be a moderator decision.

Considering the Republican party shares very little with actual conservatism I don't think it's that bad of an idea to add the category. "Corporate Crony" would also fit the description.

I'm not sur political parties should be considered leans. That said, I think it should be a text field where people can type what they want.

I put it here because of the option to have a poll.

Thank you for your reply. It's hard being politically-scattered, aint it :)

Good point. I revert to my previous statement about my actual lean. I lean somewhat toward traditional Republicanism, rather than the ideals of conservatism.

I'd also like to see that but I know it just isn't possible. I guess the "other" field is supposed to be all encompassing and anything that isn't a choice there today.

I chose "undisclosed" because "ACLU groupie" wasn't available.

It's equivalent to a protest vigil.

The thing with leans is that no matter what you choose, other people will think it means something completely different. Let me give an example based on mine. I am very liberal, which means I support a strong central government and social safety net. Because of that lean, people have told me I support the following, which I do not: tax increases, banning guns, socialism, communism, fascism, forcing churches to marry same sex couples, limiting free speech(the fairness doctrine especially), special rights, equity of outcome(does any one actually support that at all?), stealing, weak foreign policy(despite that I am more hawkish than average), and that is just the beginning.

So I would not worry much of they do not have a lean tailor fitted to just what you think. That is true for most people here. Argue your points and when people make a misassumption based on your lean, PWN then for it and smile. If the mods tried to include all the leans people have suggested, the list would take all day just to read through, and people would still misunderstand what you really are. People like to tell me and others that "my side" supports or is opposed to this or that, based on my lean, and the truth is the only person who holds the exact views I do is me.

welcome to being one of the square pegs that never quite fits into any of the "known" round holes

put your lean as close to what it is.......mine seems to be libertarian

a lot of our posters dont put down a lean......some are easily recognizable.......some arent

up to you

The tag "Libertarian Conservative" has always appealed to me. A lot of my gay friends tended to be thus.

I hate welfare but like the Federal Reserve.

You all have it easy.

Yea but I feel like the left-leaners have more options- more specific.

I think just adding Republican (and Democrat too) would be helpful. I'm not really conservative, at all, but I am Republican value-based as opposed to centrist.

IMO it seems like a good idea. I see where you're coming from though.

How about a 'fill in the blank' field where you can put anything that you want?

It would be interesting to allow others to fill in the blank, and see what the majority think our leans are.

Since President Eisenhower first took office in 1953 and began accepting New Deal policies as a fait accompli, I'm not sure what it has meant to be a "traditional Republican." Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan, in their rejection of an ever-larger federal government, had views more like Republican Presidents before FDR.

Most forums I've seen don't allow for political lean, I think we should be happy with what we have here at DP. I would be happy with left, center and right.

People should get to know a person, absolutely. Leans for many are just that, leans. They're not all-inclusive pigeon-holed descriptions carved in stone.

On the flip side, though, I have seen some here who choose a lean and, after interacting with them for awhile, notice they're either trying to kid me or they're kidding themselves.

Then there's a few who seem to change leans more often than they change their underwear.

I no longer buy that, in hindsight.

"Republicanism" has virtually nothing to do with conservatism today, it's all neo-con nonsense that is a lot closer to hyper-religious liberalism than anything remotely resembling being conservative.

Lots of us are Goldwater-conservatives, we see no need to adopt "new conservative" views, in fact, we see them as destructive and non-conservative in scope. But most people in the modern world who have no memory beyond last Thursday, they don't even remember who Barry Goldwater was.
