Never said, nor implied that. I have worked with a number of US Military when I was in. Fine soldiers.
In my present employment I still meet a number of US drivers. Rare in the extreme to have an issue with them.
As to what people put on their backpacks, well I do not.
I also leave my Military ID tucked away.
I also carry a dummy wallet for just those times when someone may ask- hand it over.
Little bit of cash in it to satisfy their need not to get violent.

Well, I stay out of the resorts, don't do tours, I ride buses and subways, and I blend in (not so much in Asia or Africa). Most of my travels lately are just quick 3 day weekend trips to Mexico or Hawaii, but I've been everywhere and plan to go to all the other places I haven't been. Most important thing you can do is to read up on the culture, learn a few words, and don't be a dick. Also, know enough about football (soccer) so that you can strike up a conversation, it is always a great topic whereever you go.

    We actually are.

We pretend to be different, but we all drink beer for breakfast, we all play hockey, live in igloos as summer homes, and smoke pot.

Oh, but some are different, they don't kill baby seals.

Except the seal hunters. They drink Canadian Club.

Fact, there are more gun owners in Canada than the US.

Fact, guns are easier to purchase than the US.

More Canadians hunt than any other developed nation.

    And we have oil....

OK, I have met some US Citizens while traveling that were rude and ignorant. The majority I have met, sat and had a chat or a beer with, nice people.
I found on average, Brits to be rather more rude and ignorant than Americans, these are my experiences.
As in anything, when in another country it is in how you present yourself and interact.
Please, thank you and a smile goes a long way.
