Re: Should we get rid of or reduce Temp Agencies?

Should we remove them? No, however I have mixed feeling about temp agencies and how employers exploit potential employees. At a job that I had about 18 years ago the company would sometimes hire temp-to-permanent employees threw a local temp agency. The temp agency payed them $2-3 less per hour than if they had been hired directly by the company.
If they performed well the company would offer to hire them on full time but at the same pay rate that the temp agency was paying them. I guess they figured that if they were willing to do the job at a reduced price than they would be happy enough to keep working at that wage. It just rubbed me wrong to see them act this way I suppose.

for this company the majority of them do and when they dont its because they cant hack it

for another company i worked for there were times when we didnt hire them and had no plans to hire but we always identified those jobs as a temp position and typically with a time limit.

also when other jobs opened up that were temp-to-hire i usually had the agency look for those guys to see if they were interested in coming back if i liked them

It's definitely a regional thing. The temp agencies aren't worth a can of spit here in Northern Nevada.

    Anectdote...

I had just move to N.N. and immediately put in work for multiple temp agencies...
Manpower, appleone, kelly, integrity staffing all of 'em.

None of them found me any work for like four months even though I called once a week. Then I got a job at Wal&mart after putting in an app directly. While working at Wal*Mart one of the agencies calls me up after two months telling me they finally found work for me. **** off. 2 1/2 YEARS later I quit because it's WAL&MART.

So I do the same thing again...working with multiple agencies calling in once a week to let them know I'm still looking etc...
One place found me work for a week after some other guy walked off the job. Then that place found me work for two days...
After three months there's nothing. However I come across a "now hiring sign" at a telecom place. I apply immediately but they tell I have to go through Manpower. WTF? I'm technically with Manpower now. They have my application and everything...

So I contact manpower and The lady interviews me. She's shocked to see on my application that I worked at the U.S. Attorney's Office as a paige. Again, this is a giant WTF for me because she's had my application for months, this telecom firm has been hiring for months directly through her office. So I'm really pissed. I got hired on after 6 months and swore I'd never work for a temp agency again.

An agency has never found me work when I needed it ever. Some of them don't even look at your application. Some of them don't even know which contracts they need to be filling!

wow that sucks ass man, sorry to here about your troubles . . . .
yeah that would turn me off of them too . . . .

Pittsburgh is growing with tech jobs and healthcare jobs so maybe thats a reason also? i dont know im just guessing but luckily ive never gone through that

i even contacted the two i worked with and let them know to NOT contact me with jobs unless its a certain salary because with 15+ years plus and management experience there was a lot of things i had to say no to because they were entry level or close to entry level. Now i only get call or emails about things that could actually lure me away.

just thinking about that almost makes me made and its not even me lol

Some sucked, others not so much.
Yes, the good ones can be excellent. And the ones that suck, well, we just don't use them anymore.

    That's called a conscience.

My first temp job was for a manufacturer. This was an employee owned company and they used the temp agency as a sort of probationary period. Usually if you lasted 3 months they'd hire you on full time. Well, 5 months later they finally got around to hiring me on full time but, I was rather insulted by their foot dragging and after I made sure they spent the money on pre employment drug screening and physical I walked out at lunch one day never to return. Lesson? Don't take your temp employees for granted.

My second temp job was a pool and spa distributor. This was a small shop, 6 employees including the owner. The owner was a verbally abusive schmuck. He had an inventory system only he understood and his entire shop was a safety hazard. One time as I was pulling a pallet off a shelf he failed to tell me it was supporting the contents on the shelf above it and I almost had the entire 4 story rack fall on my head. This was my fault of course. After being chastised in a most uncivilized manner for another instance which was not my fault (it wasn't I swear) I got tire of the verbal abuse and told him I was going to throw him over the balcony off the second floor loft if he spoke to me like that again. I was let go by his foreman at the end of the day.

At another temp job where they worked you like a Hebrew slave, I had a full time employee speak to me in a manner unbecoming to which I proceeded to throw a box knife at that person's head. I received a phone call the next day telling me my services were no longer required.

And still, at another temp job where they worked you like a dog I spent 4 months straight working seven days a week sometimes a double shift on the weekends to get hired on full time as the pay rate offered at that time was quite considerable. Well, the Team Lead's daughter was in my cohort and she of course was a shoe in for hire and my dedication and hard work made me a candidate for full time employment. Then, before the hiring processes started for me, the daughter of the Team Lead was hired and it was made known that NOW, after she was hired on the starting pay for the rest of us going to be $4 less an hour. A bomb threat was made on the building one day, (wasn't me, I swear, I was working) and we all were sent home. I never returned. They called me for two weeks begging me to come back and I said, "Nah, that's OK".

    So, idk, what yous tink?
I think you are a ****ty employee or you have very bad luck with employers. I would go with the former.

I guess it's pretty good for me than that I turned to self employment, eh?

Yours is almost as laughable as the other one's, almost...
