Granted all the politics and hype that comes with, it would be bad if we suspended the SOTU address. People want to hear from the President and in that forum is something prepared to tell us the status of things and the agenda of things to come. To end them now would facilitate the thinking that we are even further cut off from what government is doing. I am not saying the SOTU entirely handles this, just saying its removal would be suspect.
 
The state of the Union is now the platform from which the executive branch makes its yearly legislative agenda. It's absolutely critical.
 
No, we don't need it, but I think it's symbolic and makes for good news, so it won't go away.
 
I could go either way, it's a recap of everything that has been said before all wrapped up in a fancy stage presence.

I'm a believer that customs and traditions in a country help form the patriotic cultural fabric that helps to tie together such a large and disparate population spread across this vast nation. I see no significant harm in the SOTU that outweighs the benefits it provides both as a custom AND as a means of engaging the average non-political citizen in political issues for at least a short time.

Need it? No. Should continue it? Yes.
 
A "Please hold all applause until the end" announcement would sure be nice. I usually just wait for the transcript to be released and read it.
