This rose from another thread, and I thought it would be interesting to ask.

Thanks for your honest responses! I didn't think any of those countries were part of the Middle East. Please stay tuned! This thread does have a Part II and Part III!

Officially none. However there is a neo-con pushed idea that Afghanistan and Pakistan are "part of the middle east", along with most of North Africa and half of east Africa.. basically everywhere there is a Muslim.

I'm not interested in that. I'm interested in where these countries are located.

I guess it depends on who's map you are looking at but I voted "none." Afghanistan is really close though.

well, it's close in the way that Guatemala is close to being in North America, but isn't. ;)

Meaningless thread and quiz if you ask me.

IS it supposed to be fuel for the apologists or something?

Hatuey,

Is Egypt in the Middle East?

Nope, I'm asking a general question on what people believe and what they know. If you don't like it, you don't have to participate.

One is on the horn of Africa, 2 are in the Indians Sub-Continent and the rest are in Asia.. so 1 Africa and rest Asia if you want the ball park :)

Thank you Pete, as always you're willing to answer questions directly.

Egypt in the west, Turkey in the north, Iran in the east, Yemen in the south.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are usually added for holding similarities to many Mideastern countries.

Well just curious whether or not being in Africa precludes it's inclusion in the middle east in your mind. You said Afghanistan is close but not quite, and I'd agree with that.

Somalia would be the toughest to say, but no it's not either.

What do you think makes up the border of the "Middle East"?

Middle East was a term originally used to describe the area between India (including Pakistan) and the Mediterranean, including Turkey and the Arabian Peninsula. Afghanistan could be included, but it generally isn't.

ME = Asia

Egypt isn't in Asia. Turkey and Cyprus would certainly dispute that as well as Cyprus is part of the European Union and Turkey wants to become part of the European Union.

I would say it is the countries with a Semitic background (which the Afghans don't have) and going maybe as far as Iran. Once you get into Afghanistan, there is a lot influence from non-persians, non-Arabs and as such I don't consider them to be part of the Middle East. Then again, I'm not alone in this frame of mind.

You ask what you claim is a simple geographical question then start dividing by politics?

Oh, this is going to be fun.

I smell a bait thread.

Well, as of late a lot of bait threads have been made by certain posters. I assure you that no such thing will come of this. :)

I'm not dividing by anything. I'm just saying that those countries would dispute that with their actions. As far as the thread goes, none of those countries are in the list I provided, so they're entirely irrelevant to the topic. :)
