By all means. This is something that should have been done long ago. This country is so conflicted. Pornography everywhere, but prostitution is illegal. Amazing.

I'll just sum up my position by stating that the fact we even have something called a "Vice" squad in every police department seems more like a throwback to pre-Revolution times than modern society.

I think George said it best.

George Carlin "I don't understand why prostitution is illegal. Selling is legal. ****ing is legal. Why isn't selling ****ing legal? You know, why should it be illegal to sell something that's perfectly legal to give away? I can't follow the logic on that one at all! Of all the things you can do, giving someone an orgasm is hardly the worst thing in the world. In the army they give you a medal for spraying napalm on people! In civilian life you go to jail for giving someone an orgasm! Maybe I'm not supposed to understand it..."

It should be legal but heavily regulated to ensure the health of the prostitute and and customer are protected and for the financial protection of the prostitute. Frequent checks for STDs, no unprotected sex by both the prostitute and customer, and frequent health inspections of the place of business regardless if that business is private home, cat house or some other facility where the prostitute works. There should also be wage/pay protections to ensure that the prostitute gets to keep the majority of her pay earned from her services so that she is not taken taken advantage of by a pimp,'employment' agency, brothel, cat house or some other employer.

Legal yes, but no street prostitution. An age limit which states that prostitutes must be 21 or older.

A monthly health check up. No prostitution without condoms, that would become illegal. No prostitution business may be owned by someone with gang links or criminal convictions. All prostitutes have to get a permit in which they must prove their age, health status and of course to prevent human trafficking they must either be American citizens or have a work permit that is valid.

Make it legal, make it clean and disease free.

You can never stop it, but you can make it safe for those that partake and those who sell.

I see no reason for it to be illegal, other than to appease social conservatives. Religion has made sex a dirty, sinful deed. Maybe it's time for society to grow up.

but on the contary teh rate of prostitution will increase if it is legalized

Prostitution bans are bull****. If you can give it away, you should be able to sell it. Makes no sense to me.

Never mind the fact that these laws end up harming the women more so than if we just left them the hell alone and decide for themselves what to do with their body.

I don't care if prostitution increases. It is one of those things that should not be illegal.

This is an area where the police dept has to waste their time and efforts.

If someone wants to sell/lease their body, then let them do it; it's their call. Heck you can sell blood, semen, donate your organs (once you're dead). Why are the latter any more noble than the first?

Legalizing prostitution by bringing it out of the dark would lead to a safer environment for those that do it. Over time it would lose the stigma that it now has.

The older I get, the more I believe prostitution is a cancer on our society. It involves pimping, human trafficking, and, transnational slavery in many of Europe's "success stories" like Germany. If there was a way to guarantee that these illegal activities didn't thrive off prostitution, I'd be all for it. However, as these other illicit activities are required to ensure cheap labor in many countries, I don't support its legalization on a willy nilly basis. In some countries, prostitution may work, however in America's case, some areas of the country have proven they're really good at ignoring slavery and oppression of some individuals by other individuals. So I wouldn't trust any state to create laws which do more than regulate taxation and STD testing on these women.

Yeah, I think it should be legalized, but regulated, including licenses, regular medical care, etc.

Amadeus, I agree with you that it should be made legal. However, I feel compelled to point out that religion has not made sex a dirty sinful deed. It is malicious, envious people who want to use religion as a weapon to subjugate others that have made it a sinful dirty deed. Not only them, but other malicious and envious people who are arrogant and therefore feel the strong need to prove that they are better than other people, do the same.

That said, I think I understand what you mean. However, I really thought I should clarify that point. Such so called religious people are not actually religious. For them religion is a weapon. It is more or less the bin Laden paradigm of religion. That is not religion.

As with drugs and alcohol, it's the prohibition that fuels the criminal elements of prostitution.

It's a tough question because prostitution can come with some ugly things. For instance, human trafficking. However, like with drugs, I think legalizing takes a lot of power away from gangs and cartels, and allows for more regulation and control.

For that reason, I am pro-legalization.

OMG! It's you! I guess I should run to escape the wrath of the great one!

Seriously, it should be legal and regulated. Furthermore the persons engaged in the practice should be vigorously protected the law and law enforcement.
