This question applies to all the adults who you’ve actually met, seen, interacted with, and who live within approximately 50 miles of you.

They can be family members, friends, co-workers, fellow students, club members, whoever. The only other requirement is that both of you have to know each other by name.

Now imagine that you asked each of these people, individually and privately, the following question: “How would you describe yourself politically?”

What percentage of them would say something like “liberal” or “mostly liberal?”

I'm the most right leaning person in my group of friends. Overall, of those I know who have some interest in politics, I'd say about 60% liberal or, at least, Democrat.

Maybe somewhere around 65%. I've spent some time in predominantly conservative areas and knew a much higher percentage of conservatives, but as a city gal, there just tend to be more liberals around in most of the places I've lived.

It's probably better to ask how many liberals I know, who don't realize they are liberals, and how many people I know, who think they're liberals, but really aren't. ;)

probably around 10-15%... after all, liberals are a pretty small % of the population.

the vast majority of folks around me are moderates ( i'm in semi-rural Texas) probably 50-60%.. the rest are conservatives

even in Vegas, most folks around were moderates.... in Colombia, most are apolitical.( conservative in nature, but not in a political sense)

...good point.

( the same goes for self professed conservatives too)

I believe it's safe to say that people who self-identify as liberals or conservatives will vote accordingly. Whether they're genuine liberals or conservatives is more an academic question than anything else.

About 60% liberal. The rest are a variation of moderate, conservative or independent.

well,I don't think they vote according to their ideology, per say.. I do think they vote according to conventional wisdom regarding parties , though.

In my school setting, like 75% are liberal. Outside of that it's about 50%

seems weird to me that folks live around such high percentages of liberals ... when liberals only make up 20% of the population

For me, the number is pretty large. I would say that at least 70% would describe themselves as liberal politically: there positions on issues demonstrate that as well.

About the last thing I ever ask any one is whether they are liberal or conservative. I really have no idea of what proportion is what, nor can I see why I would care.

I knew one person who would admit to it, she was way political and hands down the most liberal person I ever met, I always enjoyed my discussions with her RIP. She also hated, hated paying taxes, lol. I know there are a few around but I don't know that anyone would admit it. Our county votes 70% republican.

I don't know of anyone who likes paying taxes!

I'd say that this year that number has decreased drastically, as I got a job working for a conservative charity organization, so now I know a lot more bible thumpers. I actually met a creationist priest in real life a couple of months ago. Yet, still a good guy. If you were to ask me last year that number would have been closer to 75% because I was working for a Health Care firm in Boston. I live in NJ, so I know quite a few liberals still. However, I have always had a good balance because my dad's side of the family is mostly conservative, while my moms side is liberal. My dads brother is liberal and my mom is a birther nut! HEHE. Even my sister is liberal.

I don't consider myself one way or the other. I'm not an activist. I'm just a Republican.

EDIT: I know more black conservatives than black liberals. However, I'm pretty sure some of them still voted for Obama. And I have no idea why, how can you vote for someone that clashes with your religious fundamentalism?

the only thing interesting to me about this poll is how many folks think they live around such high percentages of self identified liberals....

but yeah, i don't ask anyone outright either.... it just comes out in conversation most of the time...

You are right no one likes paying taxes but most are resigned to doing so. Most of the actual hatred about sending our government money comes from people I know on the right, she was the exception.

really?... spend some more time here at DP... there's tons of people that profess to love paying taxes around here

I suspect most professing such are for the most part still in the theoretical stage of being taxpayers.

It's possible that a greater proportion of people who (a) are politically aware, and (b) go online happen to live in "blue" areas.

Not quite half, but close. That's disproportionate given the area I'm at.
