Please see my other response. I explained why it's a law in NYC, and all over the country.

What if Joe Blow is going 40 in a 25 past a police officer and doesn't get pulled over. A mile down the road a kid jumps out in the middle of the neighborhood road and is killed because the car was going 40. Had the officer enforced the laws, said child would have had a chance at life.

That's my only reason for not fully agreeing with you. I do agree with your overall message though.
I understand completely. Bear in mind that police have no idea what the repercussions of not enforcing such laws could be at any given time. Here in Virginia in recent years we've had several state troopers murdered over misdemeanor traffic stops. The stops were not worth the officers' lives. Remember, no officer has any idea at the initiation of an apprehension of the emotional state of the offender or other crimes the offender may have recently committed. In heightened tensions such as we see in NY just now, why risk such an event without sufficient force to counter a possible reaction? In addition, a violent reaction may not be realized until days or weeks later on another completely unsuspecting officer - just as we've recently seen.

Wait, arrests are down 66% and the city isn't burning to the ground?

They should make this policy permanent.

I stand corrected. I was speaking generically. Around here, we don't have parking ticket writers. We have police officers that do all of that except in the very inner city, and that's quite small. I avoid large cities these days as much as possible. Actually, where I live there aren't any public parking spaces. Just roads, hills, valleys, fields, woods and streams.

I wonder if the loss of revenue is offset by the costs of enforcement. I admit I don't care enough to look.

It may be a policy in some agencies but it's certainly not universal. I was pulled over 18 months ago for an alleged traffic violation by SCPD (Suffolk County NY) and it was by a single car with a single officer in it. During my drive home last night I passed a single SC PD cruiser, lights flashing, sitting behind a car that he had pulled over. There was a single officer on the scene, standing next to the pulled-over car, speaking to the driver.

All cops, all across the country being killed by those they pulled over, doesn't happen either.

something like a 700,000 LEO's employed. doing stops day in and day out, every day....

62 killed by the person pulled over nationwide in the last decade.

    It's very very rare.

I try to avoid the city too if I can. I live in the burbs now but still work in NYC and so have to go there 2-3 times a week. "Just roads, hills, valleys, fields, woods and streams" sounds wonderful. I'm jealous.

Police are harassing people a third as often? Arresting black people for using drugs but not white people for using the same drugs in the same amount is happening a third as often? Good. This is closer to the level of police activity we should have had in the first place.

It's not for everybody, but I prefer it. I've lived in many different places from the city to the jungle (literally), but this is home to me.
