The command in question is from the Ten Commandments: “You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth be*neath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God” (Exodus 20:3-5).

Note that the context shows that the term “graven image” is used to refer to an idol—an image created to be worshiped as a god. Could this mean there are in the Bible two classifications of image—true images and false images? Appropriate images and in*appropriate images? If so, how do we distin*guish between them?
Are you having trouble reading those verses? They are very clear that graven images are neither to be made nor worshiped. Or does the Bible support the freedom of expression to make any image you want?

What huge hypocrisy in a majority answering yes.

Put a poll up on the Ten Commandments being in the State capital and those same people would have answered no.

That's right. What of it? Do you think conscientious objectors to being drafted for active service in the U.S. military get to base their objection on whatever "religious beliefs" about war being sinful that they managed to cook up to get out of serving? The applicable federal laws require the belief to be based in some real, recognized religious tradition.

No it is not.Religions have a certain set of beliefs and practices. Those who do not adhere to those beliefs and practices are phonies.

But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

"Prevent all displays" and/or "remove the space altogether" weren't poll options.

However, and as already noted, the Rotunda space is NOT a "religious display zone." It's classified as a "free speech zone," in which case anyone should be allowed to display (almost) anything, including criticisms of having a "free speech zone" used for religious displays in the Rotunda.

I know the difference. Never worshiped a Nativity scene. Not once.

Even a literalist would know that.

A classic exampole of why reading before answering would have done a world of good and kept you from looking silly. A 10 commandments display on the Rotunda at the Florida capital would be perfectly acceptable as it fits within the rules governing that space. It would be perfectly acceptable for the same reason the satanist display is perfectly acceptable, because it is a free expression zone set up by the state so any group can apply for space and the only real limitation is how much space is available.

See, you could have learned all that by actually reading the thread, and saved yourself from saying something really painfully stupid.

I think to a certain degree it should determine if its a real religion or just a made up to scam the system. I do not know about you but I do not want inmates in prison claiming that eating t-bone steak is a part of their religion and the government has to accommodate them.

I support some minimum standards like 100 members, a designated place of worship, and some other stuff, but only because there is limited space in the capital and it makes sense that the more popular ones would get first crack at that space
That might be a good idea considering all the religions out there.

For the future Aliens who might dig this thread up.

1: No we aren't all crazy and lost. Some of us do know this is all fantasy. Please don't think we were all crazy. We weren't.

2: Yes, this was really a discussion by adults of our species about fantasy intertwining with the laws the society operates under. Again, we weren't all crazy. Don't judge us all by this.

The Church of Satan is a recognized religion. Look it up. Getting back to my point - if the government recognizes the religion - regardless of what religion it is - then freedom of religion as identified in the 1st amendment (as you said you must have missed reading about that one) applies. What of it? You asked the question, I answered.
“I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what’s being proposed here, he’d agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute.” - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.
