Our system of public education was once shielded from too much federal interference. It was local operating under state guidelines and regs. Once we allowed the feds to stick their noses in everything went to hell.

    What's the difference?

Actually it's federal government involvement that is dumbing down America's public schools. They have become indoctrination centers rather then education institutions.

Because privatizing education has nothing whatsoever to do with separation of church and state, maybe?
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

As opposed to private religious schools, which are indoctrination centers rather than education institutions?

I say school should be state funded, but only the state level on down. No federal. Also, give a school a budget for the year, and they get that amount no
matter what. Kick out the troublemakers, allowing the kids who want to learn the chance to actually learn.
Agreed.....except that I am all for vouchers. The only action that will ever provide an incentive for public schools to clean up their act is competition with private and parochial schools.

Where do you get the church and state angle from the OP?

Yes.......once the feds became involved, public schools became more concerned with teaching political correctness then reading, writing, and arithmetic. They are more concerned about a child who bites his pop tart into the rough shape of a pistol then they are about graduation rates.

Total separation. Providing schooling is no more governing than providing boots is governing. The government should govern, and leave producing goods and services to the people.

Yes and no. With some matters it is federal oversight, court cases, and internal changes.
