I can't wait for the "only against hetero white males!"

What kind of question is that Medusa?
Racism exists everywhere and always will.

Yes, all sorts of prejudices exist still today some of which develop into outright racism mentality (as in institutionalized.) Mainly because you cannot legislate how people feel. Race baiting sure does not help the matter either. There is an answer and as with most social matters it comes down to education. Not the complete answer, but it sure helps. That leads to understanding and opprotunity for change. But since we are not serious about education there is no real expectation that legislation will make up the difference.

Of course, racism exists - bigots and morons exist everywhere. Laws alone cannot ever stop crime - they can only define it for later enforcement of those laws.

"Other" is unsatisfactory in my opinion. I would have like an option that said "Yes, but it is not the kind of racism people think it is."
I agree with the statements made by Morgan Freeman...

"Racism", i.e. viewing someone as belonging to a group dynamic because of their external characteristics, is a natural, subconscious thing that all people do, black white or asian. Discriminating as a result of that subconscious identification? Another thing all together.

For some that might be very real. Regardless, I would agree with you that it is foolish to believe racism is a one way street.

Racism exists, and governmental financial policy helps keep it active. Most of the inner cities are under horrible economic attack and what has happened is it's become an unintentional systematic racism. Too much of a welfare state lowers the actual drive to progress in the market. The drug war is economically destroying the actual ability of drug users to grow out of their habit, as well as creating black market crime. Due to that black market crime, a lot of businesses wont open up shop in the inner city making it harder for people in the inner city to have any actual economic stability.

I believe there is systematic racism, however i think it's an Unintentional outcome of the welfare state, war on drugs, etc etc. the worse thing as a nation would be to blame white people for it rather then understanding too much government does this

Was your intention that racism still exists in the laws of the United States(as in racist laws), or within the American society? (as in racist people)

The foolish thing is to not understand the difference between racism and racial bigotry. There will be plenty of that in this thread.

People have always had issues distinguishing between an individual's prejudices and institutionalized racism. But no matter. The source is just as important as the result in this conversation, as they both speak to the person involved.

Institutionalization is not required for systemic impacts. While today the institutionalization of racism is virtually wiped out, as such policy is illegal, there remains systemic privilege. Thus, a white and black racial bigot carry different social implications; the former is capable of perpetuating SP while the latter is not. The former perpetuates racism, societal injustice - racism, while the latter does not and is merely a bigot.

are you okay ?

While true, there is a root to it all and it explains well why racism and prejudice is still alive and well today.

The root is ignorance. Racism is perpetuated today by those that would claim racism and racial bigotry are the same thing.

Close, very close. The root of any prejudice is ignorace, which points to education being a natural answer. Matters are made worse by those that claim racism and bigotry are the same thing, but the net effect of either one is undesirable for everyone involved. It is not racism to make the confusion, just more lack of understanding. Our side arguement takes us further away from what we really should be talking about.

Being defeatist and saying a problem cannot be solved is almost as bad as denying it exists. The result is still giving up and allowing the problem to continue.

So what? There are thousands of prejudices. The only question is whether the rule of law is equal.

Is there still prejudice against fat ugly people? OMG, what are we going to do about it?!

To make the confusion is to serve racists and racism, as the false equivalence is the cornerstone of modern racist propaganda.

Our side arguement takes us further away from what we really should be talking about.

Good luck not defining racism and the thread meaning anything.

I suppose we'll leave the thread to the hetero white males that will claim AA is institutionalized racism and they are victims.

Sounds like you have way too much interest in persecution to do much about why we find prejudices in one another.

Good luck not defining racism and the thread meaning anything.

Good luck solving an issue coming into the argument with the idea that someone is racist purely upon your notions to the point that no one else has a valid opinion.

And AA is a problem, but not because of the going opinion on why.

Nonsense. Safety, defined as the absence of risk, cannot be attained yet we can (and do) pass laws to attempt to recognize and thus to reduce those risks. Making murder illegal will never end murder, just as making racism illegal will never end racism, yet having a law is a prerequisite to enforcing that law. The better that a law is enforced then he better that law will be complied with; which is true regardless of whether that law forbids practicing murder or racism.
