I posted the text of his comments in the OP, but here they are again. And I noticed very few lefties have substantively touched on it...

He also said, as I pointed out -

the Gentiles had festive lights and we Jews didn't. I didn't like that. I saw no reason why the Gentiles should have all the fun and I still don't. Having those lights and a tree -- that's what I always wanted -- to have colored lights and to be a part of the dominant culture.

If he really cared for the "Christ" part, he'd be a Christian, but he's not. That's fine, I'm not judging him for not converting. He wanted the cultural attachments around Christmas - the "holidays" if you will - without the religious part. That's not what you think he said, but it is what he said - he wanted the holidays without the Christ part of Christmas.

Are you requesting that other posters be more politically correct?

No sangha, I don't do politically correct ....

But I do promote courtesy

I read somewhere that you and your family gather for meal nearly every week.

That's like Christmas every week.... pretty cool

Enjoy life sangha

He's more religious than anyone expected.

Likely. But there was no reason to turn the whole Roman calendar on it's head when they didn't know.

That's fine. The point being that Christmas is what you want to make it. There really nothing (besides the decree of a long-deceased Roman Emperor) that gives the holiday to Jesus or to Christians. If you want to get drunk and give presents, there's a lot precedent for that.

Enjoy the holidays.

Fair enough but its interesting that you still enjoy aspects of the holiday. Do you spend time with family and friends while they celebrate?

Yup, with my closest loved ones.

So despite the rest of his comments, and the overall intent of his statement he in it for the lights. Got it.

IOW, you are asking for political correctness, but just calling it something else.

Yes, it is like Christmas every week but without the shopping anxiety. There's no need to get each other gift when we already have what we need - each other.

Basically yes. He went in for the cultural attachment, but not the religion.

What you have just told me is you don't understand the meaning of the word celebration. You should look it up, books are your friend.

If you don't think getting together with your loved ones and enjoying each others company is a celebration, then you're the one who doesn't know what the word means

The Puritans were not early Christians. They didn't come on to the scene until 1200 years after Constantine converted the Roman Empire to Christianity.

Constantine did not convert the Roman Empire to Christianity. He converted himself, and forbade the persecution of Christians. Many of the intellectuals and ruler class actually retained paganism for some time after. Ive got a "transition" coin from his reign that shows both pagan gods, and the cross.

That's really nice. I can't imagine any way life could be much better than that.

Enjoy Sangha
