    A Timeline of CIA Atrocities

    A Timeline of CIA Atrocities
    "
The following timeline describes just a few of the hundreds of atrocities and crimes committed by the CIA. (1)CIA operations follow the same recurring script. First, American business interests abroad are threatened by a popular or democratically elected leader. The people support their leader because he intends to conduct land reform, strengthen unions, redistribute wealth, nationalize foreign-owned industry, and regulate business to protect workers, consumers and the environment. So, on behalf of American business, and often with their help, the CIA mobilizes the opposition. First it identifies right-wing groups within the country (usually the military), and offers them a deal: "We'll put you in power if you maintain a favorable business climate for us." The Agency then hires, trains and works with them to overthrow the existing government (usually a democracy). It uses every trick in the book: propaganda, stuffed ballot boxes, purchased elections, extortion, blackmail, sexual intrigue, false stories about opponents in the local media, infiltration and disruption of opposing political parties, kidnapping, beating, torture, intimidation, economic sabotage, death squads and even assassination. These efforts culminate in a military coup, which installs a right-wing dictator. The CIA trains the dictator’s security apparatus to crack down on the traditional enemies of big business, using interrogation, torture and murder. The victims are said to be "communists," but almost always they are just peasants, liberals, moderates, labor union leaders, political opponents and advocates of free speech and democracy. Widespread human rights abuses follow.
This scenario has been repeated so many times that the CIA actually teaches it in a special school, the notorious "School of the Americas." (It opened in Panama but later moved to Fort Benning, Georgia.) Critics have nicknamed it the "School of the Dictators" and "School of the Assassins." Here, the CIA trains Latin American military officers how to conduct coups, including the use of interrogation, torture and murder.

The Association for Responsible Dissent estimates that by 1987, 6 million people had died as a result of CIA covert operations. (2) Former State Department official William Blum correctly calls this an "American Holocaus

It doesn't read like torture is a recent CIA policy, but an enduring policy.

There doesn't seem to be much control over CIA activities.

    Do we need the CIA?

Is the CIA involved in Economic Sabotage by manipulating markets?

Does the CIA work for the people or CORPORATE America?

Is it OK for the CIA to lie to Congress?

Is it OK for the CIA to infiltrate our "FREE PRESS?"(sarcasm, you get what you pay for)

Of course it should be abolished. I didn't even have to read the timeline but after a quick glance it only backed up my stance.
I call my own shots, largely based on an accumulation of data, and everyone knows it.

I have said it before...end the bloody CIA.

Give their duties to the FBI or the military (whichever is applicable)...same with the NSA.

And get rid of the bloody Department of Paranoia - er - Homeland Security (back to FBI).

For a long while, I was under the impression that we did in fact need the CIA. But they've been proven to lie about their own effectiveness and usefulness so now I'm skeptical on the matter. Until they prove otherwise I am inclined to agree with you on the matter.

I would need to see actual proof of this before I comment on the matter. Can you cite me the info on this

I think the CIA thinks they're working in the best interests of the American People. But our country has proven to be Corporate first time and time again so who knows at this point?

Never. Never should any public group should be able to lie an manipulate information to our lawmakers and public officials to get the results they want.

I wouldn't know about abolish as much as a major overhaul and needed reform to keep them accountable for their actions.

Yes, definitely we should abolish having any knowledge of what is happening in the rest of the world. We really should also go ahead and ban any Internet, mail and phone calls in and out of the USA too. Outlaw any travel to and from the USA. Pure isolation. Declare the rest of the world doesn't even exist.

Instead, should any rare questions come to the President about other countries, all the President needs is a quija board.

People have no clue what 99% of what the Central INTELLIGENCE Agency does.

And it's tragic that but for the CIA and NSA none of the attrocities against Native Americans would have ever happened. No wars on false information, nor colonialism or oppressing other countries. All that back to the founding of this country came from the CIA and NSA. I can't recall what year exactly in the 1700s or early 1800s the CIA and NSA were first created? Was it President Washington or Jackson? All evil came from the CIA and NSA in USA history.

Eliminate the CIA and NSA and misconduct to others will finally be over. Replace it with the pure behavior Domestic FBI and the perfectly good and decent military.

How naive and knee-jerk reactions to the millionaire television talking head can people be? Apparently there is no limit.

I totally oppose torture under any circumstance, but just how foolish and gullible are people?

Re: A Timeline of CIA Atrocities

It's obvious this country's enemies would like to see an end to the CIA, as well as all the DIA, NSA, NRO, and all the other agencies that contribute to the security of the United States. When I see people share our enemies' view on that issue--especially when I consider that most of these same people seldom miss a chance to run America down--I have to wonder why.

Reformed to suit it's necessary mission - foreign intel gathering. They should never be the action arm, gather intel and analyze ONLY. The military is our action arm, not the friggin CIA.

    "Other."

In a better world I would agree we should not have the CIA, but that is just wildly unrealistic as of today.

Many things can be changed about our foreign policy, how we use our military, and how we handle international intelligence operations. If we adopted the Swiss model but with our own flavor of "armed neutrality" then the strain on the CIA (or similar organization) would be far less. Consequently we would not have to debate so often the use of torture and other questionable means of gathering intelligence all under the political umbrella of "national security." But that is going to take a considerable amount of time and determined effort to undo all that we have done since just WWII, and in some ways before even that.

The truth is the CIA has a 70+ year history of human rights violations, illegal activities including assassinations, deception of even Congress, overthrowing or at least undermining democratically elected governments, participation in drug trades, spying on Americans citizens and even Congress itself, and upsetting some of our closest allies with their activity. Things need to change, but it will take real time to accomplish this task I suspect no one from ole (D) or (R) is willing to take on.

Just reformed. They're very good at their job, they just need to clean up the way they do it.
