My thoughts: Yes, this is the greatest nation on earth. Below are some of the reasons....

- We're the richest. We have more money than any other nation on earth and it ain't close.
- We're the smartest. We have something like over half of the world's Nobel Prize winners. Our universities are the top ranked in the world.
- We're the most industrial. Modern industry as you know it was invented and perfected in the US of A.
- We kick ass. Most powerful military in the history of human civilization relative to our contemporaries
- We're not sissies - looking at you, France
- We innovate. We invented pretty much everything in existence in the modern world, and that trend is continuing.
- We sent a man to the moon for christ's sake. That was 50 years ago. No other nation has yet to be able to do it, even today.
- We don't have stupid royalty or aristocracies. America is the only country on earth where going rags to riches is truly seen as possible.
- We dominate the global political scene. If America wants something done, such as a treaty, it gets done.
- Other nations need us more than we need them.
- We utterly dominate popular culture and the arts - Hollywood baby. ALL the movies that seen by a broad audience are American. We invented rock and roll, the blues, rap, hip hop, and all the modern media. We invented television, and pretty much everything that goes on it.

I could go on, but that's a start.

richest is WRONG. As falling wages, and millions of homeless prove.
Smartest. - If we were that smart, we would not tolerate traitors in DC.
Most industrial? LMAO

Looked at USA "industry lately?
Military - that does nothing, but leech off USA, and create TRILLIONS in Debt.
There are 2 things in the world. My problem, and THEIR PROBLEM. Learn the difference.
No invention lately. Just eliminated JOBS.
Moon? Yes AND? How about healthcare for all?
Royalty is the hereditary Bush Family. As the college entrance "pass" for Bush 2 shows. Also hereditary jobs in the corrupt unions.
if we dominate? Then why cant we provide the basics for our people?

Greatest nation on Earth?

What's the latest and greatest technology today? Computers and the internet? Both American inventions, and America dominates both industries. We always have been and always will be leading the pack when it comes to driving the direction of technology.

Then show us all the computer factory in USA...................LMAO.

First of all. Let me say my intent was never meant to imply that you were lying at all. Probably just a misinterpretation because if you read the part of your post that says "LOL, and "We could do it if we wanted to - but we are happy to eschew an enormous world-wide market, so we will continue producing mediocre, gas-guzzling and cumbersome vehicles" I and many other that would read that it implies that you think US car companies couldn't do it. Not lying at all just a different opinion.

Fair enough - mea culpa for expressing myself inefficiently. :)

It is not that BMWs and MB are not reliable cars just that they are not as reliable cars as some other brands. The fact is that outside of a few lemons that get made by every manufacturer pretty much all modern cars have very good reliability. And to be fair some of that is due to the more complicated nature of those cars. The more systems and accessories that a car has the more there is to break. A fact of life. If your car doesn't have AC than your AC will never break...

It has nothing to do with the quality of engineers that work at either company and Chevy proves that by dominating in the major racing venues they compete in. Go look up the track record of the C5R or C6R sometime.

Again, fair enough. I think we are close enough to understanding the other's point of view. I know cars have to be built down to a price to compete in the market, and being a bit of a car-tragic, I have read enough to know just how bad that can be. We only have to look at what British-Leyland did to once proud marques like Jaguar, Riley, and MG.

I also think the public's expectation of motor cars are a significant factor. In most of Europe, space is limited and roads are windy. So agile handling and good braking are usually more important factors than the amount of torque and kilowatts available. Also petrol is much more expensive here, so fuel efficiency is equally important.

But I agree with you that there are very few bad or unreliable cars - as they get more complex, there is a greater opportunity for something to go wrong.

In closing I have enjoyed discussing this with you, largely because you give reasoned argument and don't deal in sweeping generalisations. We come from significantly different cultures, but I think we have done well enough considering those difficulties.

All the best for the coming holiday season. :)

1.) Freedom

Regarding Freedom specifically, it is not axiomatic as many believe as it depends on the situation whether or not an American citizen can otherwise legitimately believe and feel that they are free. 'Cause one moment we could be watching the Super Bowl, eatin' good treats with friends and family and enjoying ourselves as though we were Kings...but then the front door bursts open, an object (flash bang grenade) clickity-clanks itself across our floor and detonates, instantly blinding us both visually and auditorily. As we stumble around in our dazed-and-confused state, 5 to 10 heavily-armed and armored men will come billowing in, shooting our dogs before they start physically assaulting us. I call it physical assault because when the SWAT team has bad intelligence, they breach the wrong house with a no-knock guns-drawn raid like our military's special forces do wherever they are pointed to do it. More-and-more of these mistaken identity raids are happening nowadays than we should feel the slightest bit of comfort with, the, "Mistakes happen," spiel falls flat to the ground because I sure as hell know that an experience like that...it changes a person. Alters their life completely. Which is where a lot of things lead today when any level of government gets involved with some unsuspecting American Joe Schmo from Small Town USA. Lives are lost, destroyed and sent in a vastly different direction before the long-arm of the law reached out and touched them by mistake. Just because it hasn't happened to us does not mean we cannot empathize with the plight everyday Americans like us have out-of-the-blue found ourselves in.

SWAT teams and the police in general is but one dimension of the loss of freedom everyday Americans have lost, most of 'em are out in the open and most people haven't the faintest idea they even exist. Which is why the noose keeps gettin' tighter-and-tighter around our rights and civil liberties -- not enough Americans are voicing complaint. If 200,000,000 of us protested, there would be immediate change. Which head-of-state wants to anger 200,000,000 people who are already protesting the government he manages? So we're very much the problem ourselves albeit the manipulations used on us are difficult to recognize as it has been repeatedly used much longer than most of us have been alive, like legislation or Presidential marching orders.

Just look at what's on the books now -- indefinite detention, no Habeas Corpus, can be blown to smithereens by a drone, are spied upon in so many different shapes & sizes...then if you look at the upper echelons of the Executive they've spent an untold amount of money preparing continuity of government operations by building underground bunkers and devising and training for contingencies such as widespread civil unrest. That contingency originated after the '68 Race Riots. People scoff at the notion because they've only ever heard it from Infowars -- they did not do a Google search for themselves. 'Cause if they did they would see the documents themselves hailing from .gov or .mil or whatever other . extension websites the government owns and operates. They have plans to intern us if the **** were to hit the fan. Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Katrina survivors know what it's like to be at the mercy of the federal government. Executive Orders going as far back as President Kennedy have laid out the framework of Americans succumbing to bondage. We can be put to work, our property including our transportation can be seized and liquidated without compensation (which is already happening -- see Civil Forfeitures)...and it goes on-and-on-and-on-and-on from there.

There is more...but it's the Internet. What was once supposed to be the bastion of our salvation has become instead TL;DR...such is life as an imperfect creature.
