Personally I don't think he has helped or hurt it much. It remains much the same as when he first took office. But here is how the nation thinks:

    Blacks, Whites Agree Obama Hasn
This Reform Party member thinks it is high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first and their political party further down the line. But for way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.

Heya SN. Winning 33 States and 66 out of 99 State Legislatures says otherwise.

Obama is a mixed race guy educated in Hawaii in a middle class setting. How could he have ever related to "Jamal in da hood"? Joe Biden said it best. "He's a clean cut guy".

Yes. He's clearly inflamed race relations. It's because he is so uppity....errrr.... 'arrogant'!

He's about as bad as Medgar Evers. That guy really hurt race relations in the South. It was all going so well before that.
Many Trump supporters have lots of problems, and those deplorables are bringing those problems to us. They’re racists. They’re misogynists. They’re islamophobic. They're xenophobes and homophobes. And some, I assume, are good people.

So what if two white house representatives were at the funeral? How did Obama harm race relations with that?

The first and only president to break the solid tradition of heads of state never commenting on a verdict of one's peers was an egregious wrong that only fostered on-going bitterness toward the system/establishment and whites in general.

But then we know his "stupid voter" supporters will ignore that and keep insisting, like all his other failures, that it isn't so.
There's also the small matter of appointing Holder as AG.

Re: In the time he has been president has Obama helped or hurt race relations.

I can't relate to anybody who thinks that it is Obama's fault that people are still racist. The one example above all else that people use is when he said that Trayvon could have been his son -- because they physically looked alike. Well, in the true American spirit of taking Obama's lengthy comments and reducing them to one sound clip, I bet there isn't a single person on this forum who has any idea what Obama actually said about the Trayvon Martin case. Black communities around the country supported Obama and were a big part of him being elected. They feel that there is institutionalized racism in this country and Obama wouldn't be representing them if he didn't address that matter.

The media takes lengthy remarks and reduces them to a meaningless sound clip that they inject their own meaning into. The new meaning has to sell, it doesn't have to heal anybody and it doesn't have to keep anybody calm. The idea is to lie, to throw a little gasoline on the fire. At the end of the day, following a major story about race, Obama could: say something positive, say something negative, say something short, say something long, or not say anything at all. There would be hours and hours of coverage of what he did or didn't say and then a lot of people would get angry despite not having heard what he did or didn't say. Then they would go out in a large group and destroy property. And that, obviously, is all Obama's fault. He should or shouldn't have said something that I wouldn't hear but would hear about, albeit entirely dishonestly, on my television and on twitter and from some idiot I forgot how I know on facebook.

But remember, nothing is our fault. Or the media's. Either black people are all criminals or white people think they are black people's masters. I forgot which one it is that I thought I believed.

In the lead up to the 2008 election, extraordinary efforts were made by the conservative to portray Obama who by all appearance at the time seemed like a decent, intelligent guy out to be the enemy of America. This vilification campaign included tactics like:

    - Creating a list of everybody he's ever known, finding the worse person(s) on that list and then proceed to condemn the actions and word of those people but cleverly spinning their condemnation as if they were practically the words and deeds of Obama.

    - Somehow creating out of thin air that "Obama has a deep-seeded hatred for white people."

    - Then after the election, after-school fights recorded on kids' cell phones and posted onto youtube turned into major news events by the conservative media and depicted as "Obama's America, where white kids get beat up by black kids" deliberately instigating white racial animosity toward blacks.

    - A USDA employee sharing her testimony in church her father being lynched by racists when she was a young girl but how in time God showed her not all whites were evil. Through that horrific act of barbarism she shared that God healed her emotional pain and gave her a love for people of all races including whites. That moving testimony was cleverly edited to make it seem like an Obama Administration official hates white people and discriminates against southern white farmers. Instead of offering an apology, the conservative media figured out a way to blame the President and started bringing in the propagandist as "consultant" when then need someone to interview on other issues until his untimely death.

I could go on. All these and other politically motivated race dividing strategies by highly trusted voices from the political right that has IMHO led to actions by some, followed by the push-back reactions from the black community have in fact greatly hurt race relational in America. I do no however, attribute this to Obama hurting race relations.
