Is MO Gov Jay Nixon helping or hurting the situation by declaring a state of emergency and deploying the National Guard in anticipation of the grand jury decision?

To quell protests about excessive force you're going to deploy the national guard. Right...let me know how that works out Mr. Nixon.

We'll never know.

If it ends up with outright war in the streets, he either caused it by doing this, or prevented it from being worse by doing this.

If not one ****ing thing happens, he either caused it by doing this, or prevented it from being worse by doing this.

Anything in between, same options.

Mr. Nixon should seriously consider resigning. He could have hardly handled the entire Ferguson situation any worse than he did.

If he were so concerned about the one-time possibility of rioting and looting, then maybe he should look at the much larger problem of the systematic oppression of people of color. Maybe, just maybe, that is what they have been desperately trying to say. But I don't expect for him--or the naysayers on this forum, for that matter--to ever get that.

Are you kidding me? How exactly would he do that to help prevent ANOTHER riot likely to occur in a week? Stopping morons from burning down businesses or residences that did squat to "oppress people of color" should be met with force. Simply because someone is not of your color is not any reason to destroy their property or to hold them responsible - that is TRULY oppression based on race which the governor intends to put an immediate stop to.

It will work perfectly. If they don't riot nothing will happen. If they do, they have been warned of the response and NO ONE will feel sympathy for what they get as a result and the Governor will have done his job. Look back through our history, people don't like rioters, even when they might normally agree with the protesters.

Considering the behavior of some of the people rioting I do not blame him for calling the national guard in preparation of the grand jury decision. Those people rioting do not give two ****s about about facts. If they did then they would consider the huge possibility Brown is scumbag who assaulted a cop and tried to take his weapon and that maybe they should wait until the facts come out before making accusations of police brutality.

No idea if he's making it worse or better. And I'm not afraid to admit that.

I believe Jay Nixon has the intention of trying to be helpful and prudent, but odds are will be used against him. I suspect that Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and the usual suspect will have a field day with the idea of extra policing of these "peaceful" demonstrations while stores are being burned to the ground.

So if you want people of color stood up for potential temporal acts of violence, then I assume that you want whites stood up for their ongoing subjugation of people of color.

Because if not, your words hold zero value.

Our Society is based on a system of laws.
A group of people, have stated that if the process of our legal system does not
produce the outcome they desire they will protest.
Some of the protest have turned criminal and violent.
One of the jobs of the Governor is to keep the peace.
One of the chants of the protestors is "No Justice, no Peace",
which seems to imply some level of violence towards people or property.

The protestors have put two United States senators on their hit list. Nixon is being very prudent in readying the NG to respond to the violence. These folks have the right to yell, hoop and holler, but they do not have the right to target private citizens and private property.

If these threats are carried out, I hope a whole truckload of excessive force is used against the rebels.

I haven't seen any oppression of people of color, unless all the private property that was looted and burned was owned by black folks and the damage was done by white folks. Was it?

i wonder if anyone were to ask the shop owners in ferguson what they thought, their reply might be?

and since insurance doesnt cover riots, their livelihood is on the line

and since most of them are BLACK, you wonder what their vote would be

do you think they would want their businesses protected?

Isn't that what a trial is about. getting to the facts? If Wilson does not want to defend his actions in a court of law... He can plead the 5th. That is his right.

What's the alternative though?

Just let them riot until they tire out?

Screaming racism has been a great political tool for the left but I just don't understand how anyone can really question this with a straight face. I mean, I guess the argument is if a riot occurs it's because the National Guard was called and, ya know, that means black people need to respond with a riot.

Just don't riot. How hard is that?

Hit list? What are you talking about? Do you know how many threats US Senators receive on daily basis. I would bet money that someone you know has a list.

I want idividuals held accountable for actual acts, not your group think BS about potential acts..

He's helping the situation by having the NG available to protect those not committing violence in the streets - or should I say potential violence in the streets.

I think this action, and several other "leaks" which have occurred, are there to help prevent an "outrage" over whatever the grand jury decides. By doing things like this, it is a suggestion there will not be an indictment against the officer. Preparing people for an outcome will always elicit a less emotional response than catching them by surprise.

I think Governor Nixon is doing the best he can to make sure the peace will be kept. To anyone who disagrees, I seriously wonder what you think should be done differently.

Maybe they’re mutating into an extortion group straight out of the playbook of Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Push Coalition?
