Should America tear down the Statue of Liberty?

Should America tear down the Statue of Liberty?

Sure, but the plaque is not referring to laws or governance.

You can try to spin this any way you like, but the fact is there are many who entered and are living illegally in this country, and they do not deserve any special consideration...

I don't care. Regardless of when the plaque was added, the inscription is now part of the statue. Would you opt to change the inscription to something more representative of conservative ideology?

The reason why you believe it is because you were indoctrinated to believe it.

In layman terms, the Statue of Liberty sends a message to the rest of the world, stay the **** home and look at what we were able to accomplish. You are capable of doing the same thing in your own country.

So what you're saying is that the inscription contradicts the statue. I do agree that changing the inscription would be easier than tearing down the statue.

Inscriptions on a statue do not define a nation...

So the conditions of their native land (e.g. if they are fleeing from violence and starvation) do not qualify as plights?
The primary reason a country has an immigration policy (and ALL countries do, BTW) is to manage the influx of immigrants with the capacity to provide. When you have too many people here you lose the capacity to take care of anyone, including yourself. The premise that we must not be pro immigrant because we dont throw open the gates to EVERYONE is simple minded at best.

The US brings in MILLIONS of legal immigrants every year, not counting those that come here on student, tourist, and work visas. We are very pro immigrant.

You have to admit the message behind the statue is misleading.

No, in fact I don't, but thanks for trying. Here's what I would like to know. What was your reaction to a Marine being held in a Mexican jail for seven months after making a wrong turn and the government's apparent lack of concern?

Possible reasons for tearing it down:

1) It attracts illegal immigrants.

2) It's French.

3) It doesn't represent American values.

What say you?

Ants!

I'm only vaguely familiar with the story, and I don't see what it has to do with the price of tea in China. I guess it was bad for the Marine. Why?

Why does this not surprise me. Good night, you're not worth anymore keystrokes...

Are you saying that Lady Liberty is a breathing piece of copper and can change her meaning any time at a whim to further her political agenda ? She must be a progressive liberal.

Hah, what? Am I supposed to be plugged-in to every story? Sorry to disappoint you.

I resent the idea that liberals are breathing pieces of copper.

The inscription has nothing to do with the message or meaning of the Statue of Liberty. The plaque was for raising money for the construction of the pedestal.

If 1884 were have been 2014, you would probably see Ronald McDonald holding Lady Liberty.

The statue looked down on Ellis Island where all the immigrants were processed. Legal immigrants. There is a right way and a wrong way. But then the times were different.

Greetings, Pero. :2wave:

If times are different, it's because we used to be known as a law-abiding nation, where the laws were meant to be obeyed by all that live in this country. I don't know if Congress used to exempt themselves from laws that applied to everyone else, but they can now. Coddling aliens that enter illegally, and are given special treatment, are a slap to those that still follow our laws on immigration, and that is not only wrong, but unjust.

My grandparents entered through Ellis Island from Europe, which was a long ride under Spartan conditions, and they were happy to be here, as were the millions just like them. They weren't out demonstrating against the country that took them in - they were learning English and finding jobs in order to be self sufficient. It wasn't that long ago when it was extremely embarrassing for a man to admit he couldn't provide for his family, though he tried his damnedest, or that times were hard around their place. And the women worked just as hard right alongside them. Was it personal pride in themselves that made a difference? I don't know, but they were humans like everyone else, and it wasn't easy

I can't vote because the "This is the stupidest ****ing poll evah" option isn't there. Sorry

Compared to some of the threads around here, an occasional troll poll is not too bad a thing!

While we're at it, can we get this thing instead?

I can't say that, my family arrived in 1654. No Ellis Island then and no Statue of Liberty. But all I have to add is, we are either a nation of laws or we are not. If we are not, then our laws mean nothing, the process means nothing. We might as well be ruled by a king.

And yes, as far back as I can remember the congress has exempted themselves from almost all laws they have passed. They even exempted themselves from the civil rights laws.

I shouldn't have been the only one who first thought this was a humorous, not-so-serious thread...

So glad you've come back to lay this gem of a poll on us.
