Should America tear down the Statue of Liberty?

Should America tear down the Statue of Liberty?

Possible reasons for tearing it down:

1) It attracts illegal immigrants.

2) It's French.

3) It doesn't represent American values.

What say you?

I really thought I'd never be able to say this -- but this is objectively the stupidest question asked on Debate Politics Polls that I've ever seen.

Nothing like a healthy dollop of xenophobia to remind us that we're on DP.

Now why don't you try to come up with a poll that's actually interesting and worthwhile?

Actually, that's a subjective observation.

Probably over half of Americans today are descended from people who entered the country through Ellis Island under the watchful gaze of Lady Liberty.

"Give me your tired, your poor; Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free"

It sounds much more like the plight of illegal immigrants seeking refuge. Just saying.

As they should very well be able to seek refuge.

I don't think so, Ellis Island was only open for business for 62 years (1892-1954) and Ellis Island was the port of entry for only 12 million immigrants. More illegal aliens have crossed our southern border than legal immigrants who went through Ellis Island.

There were many official ports of entry for America's immigrants. Philadelphia, Boston, NYC, Baltimore, San Francisco, New Orleans being the largest and many European immigrants came across the border via Canada.

On my fathers side all entered America through the port of Philadelphia in the early 1870's from Germany. On my mother side, her mother parents entered America through Baltimore from Germany in the 1890's and her father as a young child came from Scotland via Canada in the late 1890's.

America has never seen such a large number of legal immigration in it's history as we have for the past thirty years. One million legal immigrants every year.

Iv'e only seen it in a text book back in high-school so I'm indifferent either way. It's just not a real place to me.

No, it's an excellent reminder of our history and the realities of the early days of our country and how it came to be.

Just because some people who can't grasp context and the fact that over a 200+ year period that realities of a countries immigration policies are naturally going to change keep ignorantly pointing to it as some kind of holy gospel for how immigraiton laws must be isn't a reason to tear it down.

The suggestions by some of deciding modern immigration policy based on the ideals of the Statue of Liberty is about as intelligent and logical (ie, not) as those who attempt to compare illegal immigrants to the early colonists.

Although it would fetch a hefty sum at the scrap yard, probably best to leave the national symbol of "freedom" where it stands. People who complain so bitterly of immigrants should take a crash course in American history. America was founded as a melting pot of immigrants to begin with. Every American (except native American indians), by default, can trace their family history to find their ancestor who first came here as an immigrant. Anybody before that would be part of the wave of people who first got here, saw that there were inhabitants, realized that guns were better than bows and arrows, and basically slaughtered any natives who wouldn't sell them the land for a few beaver skins.

You'd do well to rethink that.

Not a bad idea. After all its only an icon. I would also say to burn every flag in the USA, Confederate flag and normal American flag, as fantasy nationalism is an oppressive lie invented by dullards. Who doesnt hate dullards? Who doesnt feel anger at being faced with a wall of dullness coming from the nationalists and religious fanatics? Perhaps without such items we would feel a free and fresh life.

I am not sure if your poll came to mind because you just watched planet of the apes or if it is because the President has brought the issue of immigration to the forefront of our media. I truly hope it is the latter.
I have been saddened so often by so many people that I know who seem to want to draw such a hard line on immigration. We have a land of opportunity and it is vast and no one gets to say to others who are searching for a better life that you should have come over a few generations back! I do have an issue with entitlement benefits to all and any born here or not but if some one wants to come work pay taxes find a safe neighborhood to raise a family.
The statue says give us your tired your poor your hungry; not come stay if you have a scientific expertise or your family has exploited natives in impoverished areas and now would like to move to Aspen. If we restrict immigration we should tear it down and replace it with a big finger.
The poor from other countries have always been used and abused by the economic system of capitalism but from hardship comes ingenuity imagination and the desire to live a better life than the one our parents lived and for the first time that is not happening because capitalism is being choked out by goverment. Every civilization seems to come to its downfall when the rulers take too much from the people. Hey we know it takes taxes to provide roads, a military, heck I'm even in favor of universal education but there is a point where private enterprise is better and helping people get on their feet is not the responsibility of the goverment. I keep drifting back to entitlements because that is everyone's biggest concern with immigration, as it should be how much will it cost should always be considered but if entitlements are eliminated some of the stimulus to move here is removed if we work harder to make all places in the world better places to live no one needs to move unless they don't like the weather.

Those damn dirty apes!

I say move it to Kansas so the illegals can't see it.

I don't believe that the apes did it.

In any case they were on this planet before humans evolved.

Only after Egypt knocks down the pyramids and the sphinx. How dare they benefit from a monument that screams the glories of slave labor.

Naw they didn't do it.

Here we go full circle...the movie was an adaptation of a French novel. ;)

That's a long paragraph.

I think we should strip off the oxidized coating and then clear coat it with something to prevent future oxidation. That way it can be it's polished copper color forever.

I think we should get her some breast implants and dress her in a thong.
