Then why don't we call them Belgian fries?

Explain that,if you can.

Here's a short paragraph that explains exactly that:

American soldiers stationed in Belgium were first introduced to french fries during World War I. As the official language of the Belgian army was French, soldiers nicknamed the delicious fried potatoes “french fries.” The name stuck, and decades later we’re still giving credit to the wrong country.

Like everything else, this too was apparently America's fault.

Seriously, what do you expect. Of course we've changed from the 1800s. Is there some nation that doesn't have immigration laws, or that's an open border that we should be emulating? Canada for example?

And really, what left wing inspired criticism of the US don't you agree with? :2razz::mrgreen:

We have damn Yanks beating down our all the time, eh. :2razz:

I actually don't doubt that. I have a friend who'd love to live there and I don't blame y'all for saying no.

I exercise my liberty to vote no...but I do think we need to add our current president to Mt. Rushmore... Mt._Rushmore_Early_Morning.jpg

The statue looked down on Ellis Island where all the immigrants were processed. Legal immigrants. There is a right way and a wrong way. But then the times were different.

The right way to immigrate to the USA now is not an option to most people who want to immigrate. It takes tens of thousands of dollars and years and the chances of success are slim unless one has valuable skills or lots of money. Most of our ancestors would not be able to legally immigrate now.

There should be a big public ceremony to sand blast the poem off the statue since it clearly does not represent the sentiments of most residents of the USA. It can be replaced with "Only special people may stay."

Greetings, Pero. :2wave:

If times are different, it's because we used to be known as a law-abiding nation, where the laws were meant to be obeyed by all that live in this country. I don't know if Congress used to exempt themselves from laws that applied to everyone else, but they can now. Coddling aliens that enter illegally, and are given special treatment, are a slap to those that still follow our laws on immigration, and that is not only wrong, but unjust.

My grandparents entered through Ellis Island from Europe, which was a long ride under Spartan conditions, and they were happy to be here, as were the millions just like them. They weren't out demonstrating against the country that took them in - they were learning English and finding jobs in order to be self sufficient. It wasn't that long ago when it was extremely embarrassing for a man to admit he couldn't provide for his family, though he tried his damnedest, or that times were hard around their place. And the women worked just as hard right alongside them. Was it personal pride in themselves that made a difference? I don't know, but they were humans like everyone else, and it wasn't easy

Do you have any idea what it takes to immigrate to the USA legally.

There were many demonstrations and protests by immigrant workers in the late 19th and early 20th century and a lot of violent suppression of their attempts to organize for their rights.

So I take it you do not identify with Lady Liberty. Now we're getting to the point.

we take in well over 1,000,000 legal residents every year. That's quite enough IMHO.

You're trying waaaaaay to hard to troll.

Scale it back a little bit.

Nah. As much as we are culturally different in some ways, we are buds in so many others. I love my neighbours to the south even if they are sometimes a little obnoxious, eh. ;)

That's only because you covet our hockey teams.

Possible reasons for tearing it down:

1) It attracts illegal immigrants.

2) It's French.

3) It doesn't represent American values.

What say you?

This is very random.

How exactly does it attract "illegal immigrants"?

Why is it being a gift from the people of France, allies of the US since 1776 a bad thing?

What are American values and how have they changed since your ancestors came to this continent?

"Give me your tired, your poor; Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free"

It sounds much more like the plight of illegal immigrants seeking refuge. Just saying.

You mean it sounds like the people who built this great nation from the rail ways to the roads to the skyscrapers. Not to mention those that worked the farms etc..... You ever been to the Statue? My guess is the people of NY and NJ would not be pleased, Republican or Democrat.

I accidentally voted yes but I meant to hit no. I see no reason why it should and if NYC ever gets overtaken by pink slime, it will come in handy.

Ghostbusters II reference noted. :peace

No, in fact I don't, but thanks for trying. Here's what I would like to know. What was your reaction to a Marine being held in a Mexican jail for seven months after making a wrong turn and the government's apparent lack of concern?

Nothing to do with the topic but what the heck do you think the US government should do about someone arrested in Mexico? You can't be thinking that US laws should apply to US citizens abroad or that Americans should get a pass on Mexican laws, can you? Or that his job should make a difference? Hell, I'm nearly agreeing with you to the extent that maybe the Canadian government should send special forces to bust Canadians out of death row in American prisons. That sound alright to you?

No for the following reasons.

1) Not near as much as home depot.

2)It's been over a century and I haven't once seen a pit hair and she never went back to France, not even to see her sister.

3) Hot women in flowing gowns? Would it help is she put on some weight?

Although it would fetch a hefty sum at the scrap yard, probably best to leave the national symbol of "freedom" where it stands. People who complain so bitterly of immigrants should take a crash course in American history. America was founded as a melting pot of immigrants to begin with. Every American (except native American indians), by default, can trace their family history to find their ancestor who first came here as an immigrant. Anybody before that would be part of the wave of people who first got here, saw that there were inhabitants, realized that guns were better than bows and arrows, and basically slaughtered any natives who wouldn't sell them the land for a few beaver skins.

They swim in from Europe obviously

Also thus thread is an expert piece of trolling. So many people were caught

Good job OP!
