With the introduction of social media it has become more and more difficult to escape the "news" no matter what it's covering. As a result discussions of every little thing under the clear blue sky is becoming more and more a common past time, for all ages.

With that the intrinsic social issues that are rampant throughout societies world wide- women rights, male rights, gay rights, racial rights, etc - get a lot of air time. And as a result there are some who appear to be weary of issues that seem to never go away. So in comes the new or reintroduced "it" phrase. "Political Correctness".

It appears that now, regardless if the issue has any merit and is in fact morally or ethically insidious , those who are sick of discussing it dismiss it as "political correctness". They insist that the everyone is too "Sensitive" and that "it's not that big of a deal".

The phrase is so over used and simplified that it is become a tired argumentative fallacy. Instead of engaging and honestly addressing an issue, those who refuse to see for what it is simply cry "PC" and go on their merry ol' way.

It's rampant on this forum as well. It reeks of false victim hood, where those who belong to a privileged class that often is contributing to the misfortune of another people essentially cry out because they are being stripped of their right to subjugate, harass, alienate, or otherwise mistreat others. It's silly.

But that's my perspective, what's yours?

Is PC a real thing? Are people too sensitive? Or is PC a cop out excuse used to sweep pressing issues under the rug?

A great deal of political correctness results from Biblically-challenged, whiny, bed-wetting liberals.

Both sides have their own PC. If you don't believe that try saying "tea-bagger."

To me, PC is just not being an asshole. It's about the golden rule of doing as you'd have done to you. Once the insults start flying, all bets are off as far as this place goes.

I like to keep things simple.

There is no right anywhere inscribed in any law, bylaw or regulation, nor is there or has there ever been a philosophy expressing any idea about a right not to be offended.

Meanwhile, since the time of Socrates and through to the constitutions of virtually EVERY democracy on the planet give me the right to say whatever the **** I want, how I want to any slithering, slime ball misfit I want to.

When people CHOOSE not to offend, or decide to find better ways to express their ideas, emotions and so forth, that is progress.

When one group of people, through political maneuvering decide to legislate what's "appropriate" then we have tyranny.

A great deal of political correctness results from Biblically-challenged, whiny, bed-wetting liberals.

Most of the whining about it comes from Conservatives who are just upset that they're not the biggest victims. Or racists who want to say "ni**er" without consequences.

Which are you?

The assertion that there is no right or wrong only multiple shades of grey followed, sometimes immediately, by but you cannot express that "offensive" opinion is the dreaded use of PC to silence opposition. The current hoopla over the use of Redskins for the name of an NFL team yet no such backlash over the (equally offensive?) use of colored people, black people or brown people drives the point clearly home. Hail to the Redskins - fight against PC. ;)

BTW, is this an "escape goat?" I'm unfamiliar with that phrase

I think the term PC is used as a catchphrase to identify 'phony, over sensitive ethics'. It's more about saying the right thing for appearance sake, than doing it, such as 'racist terms and labels' or even remotely disparaging remarks, compared to seriously egregious actions.

Political Correctness is a superficial facade many people wear in public, so as not to be condemned for NOT being a 'good good soul'.

The problem with "PC" is that Left Wing intellectual authoritarians use it as a method to try and silence opinions they disagree with, and forcibly reshape culture to their own ends.

Ironically, their primary means of doing so revolve around the very type of over-generalized "branding" and "labeling" that P.C. is supposed to prevent in the first place.

i.e.

If you criticize any culture other than your own, you are branded as being a "racist."

If you criticize a life style you find questionable, you are branded as being a "sexist" or "homophobe."

If you criticize weak domestic policy, you are branded as being a "fascist."

If you criticize weak foreign policy, you are branded as being a "chauvinist" or "jingoist."

If you criticize behaviors which perpetuate poverty, you are told that you need to "check your privilege."

Etca, etca...

It's basically just an underhanded way for certain kinds of people to hijack and destroy any discussion they don't like using pre-rendered logical fallacies that completely ignore the legitimate points that their opponents may have been trying to make.

I agree, but disagree.

I believe that the use of the term is offensive as my 'redskin' colleagues find it offensive, as I say, it allows them to call me 'pinkskin" when I haven't been able to tan.

Forcing the Washington franchise to change is wrong.....

I or any 'redskin' is free to choose to ignore their games, no one has the right to take from their right to express themselves.

Influence comes through knowledge, not law.

Provide some examples of what you see as PC in action, if you can.

1. Trying to stop retailers from saying "Merry Christmas."

2. In various areas changing "Christmas" to "Winter Holiday."

3. Pushing the lie that gay sex and gay marriages are perfectly proper and legitimate.

4. Forcing kids to eat Michelle Obama-approved lunches.

5. Kicking God and Jesus out of everywhere they can.

6. Saying it's improper to use the term "illegal aliens."

7. Forcing Christian pastors in the military to perform gay marriages, etc., contrary to their religious beliefs.

8. Obama & company downplaying terrorism - i.e. labeling the Ft. Hood shootings as "workplace violence". Turkeys.

9. Banning students from wearing 'American Flag' shirts, etc.

10. Giving all kids on a team trophies because they don't want there to be a 'first place' trophy in case the others might 'feel bad.'

There's a hundred or thousand more but those are some that came to mind.

Anyone that claims they were offended by what someone else said and wants something done to prevent it from happening again. What they fail to get is that they don't have a right to not be offended.

I had a relevant situation occur not too long ago. An individual from the left side of the aisle told me that what I said offended them and that I should't say it again. I quickly informed them that whether or not I said it again was not based on them being offended as that will never be a requirement for me in considering what I say. I didn't really care if they like it or not as that didn't matter when I stated what I believed. They had a choice. They could either get over it or tough sh*t.

You're full of nonsense with that garbage.

I would need to see an example of the term being used to identify what you believe is phony and substantial positioning on an issue. I've only ever seen it used when social issues are brought up that have offended a group of people and is used to describe that group of people.

For instance -
Amazon Warns About 'Racial Prejudices' In 'Tom And Jerry'

Amazon recently added tom and jerry with it's originally aired episodes. This means that it includes the representations of attitudes that existed 70 years ago. As a result they added a disclaimer identifying that Tom and Jerry have ethically dubious episodes that deal with racial perception.

People, as you can see in the comments, are calling this pc. Which i find ridiculous. The imagery of black face and other stereotypical punch lines that are made at the expense of a people in the show can be a bit a jarring to those that it hits closest to home to.

That why I pointed out that it's usually the privileged class that cries PC. Notice the racial make up of group who is crying pc and the group who is seeing it for what it is.

This is something I've noticed for many discussions in which the phrase PC is thrown around. Typically those who endorse or are otherwise unaffected by the issue take the stance of indifference, while those who are effected take it seriously.

I'll add one to your excellent list:

I think the correct term would be to say I am 'patriotically challenged' thankyouverymuch.

What a fine example we have here of correctness thinking...

You criticize something and it is immediately assumed you "hate" America......

Patriotism is a disease, a false idol users use to rally others to do their fighting, congressmen whose sons will never face war love to wax on about "patriotism'. and through that, the word has come to mean "love it or leave it"

I left.

Loving one's country is not only possible, but desired over "patriotism", as it comes from the heart and is strong enough to see what's wrong and try to fix it. The "patriot" believes its wrong to even see what's wrong.

There is no right not to be offended. Once we establish such a right then I will be offended, thus it must be repealed. ;)

No where in my OP did I imply that someone has to right to impose their will onto another. However a honest discussion that is curtailed by fallacious cop out terms is ridiculous and impedes any form of intellectual discussion.
