Do you think decourm and politness has any place in our society?
I don't give a crap about political correctness. I don't think it brings any value to our culture or society.

I just dont understand why PC is such a big deal to either side. If the right dont like teabaggger, I dont call them that, if someone else dont like redskin, I dont call them that. We aint out of words. Why is being rude so important?
Politeness, sure. But I can be rude as hell and still be politically correct.

It's not that being rude is important, like I said I can be rude as hell and still be politically correct.

I don't call people names, but I heard something from glaad trying to get the word homosexual classified as a slanderous term.

It isn't groups of people not wanting to be called this or that it's some assclown speaking for everybody. I find political correctness to sometimes be offensive.

I am a nice guy, I aint so sure about the rest of these people though. You are probably right.
I'd rather not post what town I live in primarily for my kids' safety.

I know you're not a maniac.....but a lot of people read this board, and there may be some nuts out there.

Yes mostly by teachers, although one of mine got in trouble in 6th grade when he was waiting in the guidance office for some papers he was bringing back to his class. It was right before Christmas break, and he said "Merry Christmas" to the secretary when he left, and she called me. I was fuming (at her, NOT my kid).

I think in my town's case it was implemented by the school board, which is surprising given how non-liberal my town is (we went about 82% for Romney in 2012).

It annoys me.

Well, what did she say, exactly? I'm not doubting it happened -- people like that exist. I'm just wondering how she justified her anger.

Most of the PC individuals I have come across are liberal, Biblically-challenged, or milquetoast Christians. That's where a lot of PC comes from.

Have you ever really sat down and studied the Bible in depth?

You should check out the documentary on the members of the MPAA on netflix, if you have a subscription for it. All the members are Christian conservative parents (but I guess those are the sort of Milquetoast Christians you were referring to).

After I talked to her, or when she called me?

When she called me she wasn't angry. Just said "Mrs. Borrachos we have instructed the kids to not say "Merry Christmas" out of respect for our students who don't celebrate Christmas, and to keep to the general celebration of the holiday" (something like that). I asked her in my pissy way if any of those kids' parents take off for Christmas. She said "of course most of them do" so I said "Well, there you go...they're celebrating Christmas on December 25. Merry Christmas."

The next time I saw her after that she was a little curt with me.

I admittedly get pissy with the school people because I had to sit through a session with parents where they shared the "Keep kids off drugs" curriculum, only to find out that they teach our kids that cigarette smoking is as bad as cocaine/drugs (WTF) and that gambling is a vice and they tell the kids it's bad.

Trying to force people to say "happy holidays" is no less ridiculous than trying to make them say "merry Christmas."

Classifying 'homosexual' as slanderous or offensive is silly, but I have heard people use the word in an intentionally insulting manner. Its not just the word that matters, it is the context and intent of the word use.

The history of terms for developmentally disabled people is informative. Originally terms like 'idiot' and 'moron' were descriptive, not insults. Every few years they have to create a new term because the most recent term has become an insult. It can be excessively 'correct' to change which words are considered acceptable so often.

To an extent that is true. Eventually, however, I think terms do need to be recycled to avoid *some* of the baggage involved. However, I do not think that should be the primary concern. In terms of "idiot" and "moron", the wording ws changed so as to allow for what was considered a more accurate and diversified classification system. Avoidance toward the stigmatization of those persons was a primary concern for moving toward using the term "mental retardation." What I think is far more useful to these persons is addressing the mentalities which surround the pejorative nature of words. Merely changing the words doesn't address what drives those words from being a classification term to a pejorative, or a classification term laced with negative association (which, by the way, idiot, moron, imbecile, or even the classiication system o retardation did have--they weren't actually objective terminologies, but rrather science laced with judgement on those persons).

Absolutely, the language has to change to protect feelings. Where does it stop?
