What happens if the ebola outbreak from West Africa spreads in the West?

What happens if the Ebola virus spreads in the West?

As long as it doesn't become more highly contagious than it currently is and mutate into an airborne version, it'll probably not be rampant. They've already got a few antiviruses being experimented on, and a pretty good treatment plan. Hep-C and HIV actually scare me as much, though they're not as quick to kill.

yeah true, but you can't get AIDS from touching a doorknob, or taking care of an infected person. This seems to be much more easily transmissible, and equally, if not more, deadly.

Its here, of course the government will never admit it. And they would wait till about a million dead before doing anything.

And we're getting into the frozen months, when sickness is widely prevalent. Swell!

I swear, the level of abject ignorance on how this disease is transmitted (and easily controlled in Western countries) is amazing.

I'm waiting for someone to suggest the way to prevent it is to throw Jews down the well.

I saw a few people today really wiping their hands hard at the grocery store with the provided disinfecting towelettes. True, Ebola is far easier to contract thru fluids in skin breaks than those other viruses. We all have minor cracks in our hands that we can't see that transmit and pickup diseases.

My fear is probably what you and others are suspecting, how fast can this whole thing change into a real bad scenario?

Not 'if', 'when'.

The first case appeared in Dallas.

There will - imo - undoubtedly be more.

Interaction with infected bodily fluid is enough. Someone sneezes nasty **** into their hands, and then proceeds to touch things that other people touch, whether purposely or inadvertently.

Russia is more likely to nuke Europe than for Ebola to get out of control. That probably didn't make you feel any better?

Seriously, now that the gov't is aware of it's potential for being an epidemic, they'll put the brakes on it. :)

Hope so. I don't scare easily. This stuff? Scares me. Like overly.

I'm of the opinion that you'll never guess the thing that gets you eventually. Like the war story about 'how you never hear the bullet'.

I remember an episode of "Kung Fu", where he and this man were in a jail cell waiting to be executed the next day. Caine was sitting on the floor meditating calmly, while the other guy was freaking out asking Caine, wasn't he worried? Caine quietly asked would worrying change the outcome, and the other guy said, I suppose not. Caine said, then I choose not to worry, since it will not help. I know, easier said than done.

All we can do is take prudent precautions and try not to be overly anxious about things out of our control. I've had Epstein Barr and a bad case of walking Pneumonia, and though they're not pleasant, there are far worse ways to expire.

Not quite. That sneeze has to get into an open wound. And, of course, Ebola is infectious while symptomatic, so they'd be pretty wickedly sick.

Blood, feces and vomit. Avoid these, and you're pretty good. Unless you watch TV news all day.

It's blood to blood transfer. If you touch the active virus and then touch an open sore or mucus membrane on your body, it's possible to transmit it.

AIDS is transmissible the same way, but it does not survive long outside the incubation of the human body. I dont know how long the Ebola virus exists on 'doorknobs' but I dont think it's long. I dont know tho.

I wouldnt panic.

Is that true? Is it transmissible thru respiratory expellations?

it might be in advanced cases once the lungs are compromised and fill with blood. Before that...and that would be before symptoms or at least early...I dont think so.

You cant be for real.

They say fear is the "default mode" of the soul that dwells in darkness.

Faith can overcome that darkness.

IMO, bodily fluids are bodily fluids.

This round has mutated faster than expected so all bets are off.

Greetings, WCH. :2wave:

I read somewhere that Ebola could be within two mutations of becoming an airborne problem. Since there is currently no cure - at least I haven't read that there is - and considering that it takes 21 days to start showing symptons - could it mean that anything that would normally draw large crowds, like sporting events or even the midterm elections coming up in a few weeks will be cancelled? I wonder.....

In two cases ( in North America) it has become airborte. GOOGLE EBOLA MONKEY ACCIDENT

But how convenient if the elections were to be postponed.

How about 1+m dead impotent government intervention

It hasnt mutated significantly at all. Where did you read that? It is spreading faster than expected.

That was a related but different virus that only certain species of monkeys get. It was not transmitted directly to any people except one who cut himself and had blood to blood contact. He didnt get it.

It was not and did not become airborne.
