Already established that they gave up those rights when the DC was formed.

Did they? The land that forms D.C. had people living on it before D.C. was created. Did those original residents willingly give up their rights?

I'm against the idea of D.C. statehood but believe D.C. Representative in Congress should have voting rights. I'd also lean towards giving the district Senators as well

DC residents are taxed without representation in Congress. The same type of situation, in fact, that started the revolutionary war. I say yes, turn DC into the 51st state so that the 645,000 DC residents actually have representation in their federal government.

Theyre all on the govt teet so they shouldnt have representation anyway

Hence the problem.

No, the problem is that they CHOOSE to live there, knowing that they're not in a state and don't get to vote. What about personal responsibility?

What about granting DC statehood will make it cease to be the seat of the government?

Or you could just make every American citizen, regardless of where they live, eligible to vote and not worry about statehood. American citizens living overseas can still vote, just make the people in Washington DC able to vote by mail.

So? Does this mean it shouldnt/cant change?

Washington DC is so awful due to the residents of the city---who have elected leaders that share their typical moral values of smoking and sniffing coke, defending or participating in street gangs and various other criminal pursuits.

DC is only going to go downhill---maybe not as bad as Sodom or Gomorrah, but with a city so controlled by morally debased residents---it will be hard to change.

Because residents of DC don't have representation in Congress.

Because the citizens who reside in DC do not have an actual voice in congress.

In the United States House of Representatives, the District is represented by a delegate, who is not allowed to vote on the House floor but can vote on procedural matters and in congressional committees. D.C. residents have no representation in the United States Senate. As a result of the Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution, adopted in 1961, the District is entitled to three electoral votes in the election of the President of the United States.

Precisely.

That might be a good idea. Or give them 1 Representative and they are added to the "districts" of one Maryland Senate Seat and one from Virginia.

Precisely.

LOL

Desperate for a couple more Dems in the Senate?

I think the way revenue is confiscated by the various government entities throughout the country makes this "taxation without representation" meme a bit of a hard sell. I think there would be very little sympathy on that tactic from taxpayers around the nation.

While I may oppose such a move to add D.C., there are perhaps better arguments than this taxation thing.

Just give the people voting rights and call it done. Sorry, but I'm not open to making the capital a state.

Until the morons stop electing a coke head to public office they don't deserve a vote in congress.

If representation is so important to the residents of the District, then the district should be returned to Maryland and they can all enjoy their representation as Marylanders. This is the same as when the remaining 33 square miles was returned to Virginia.

What gives you the right to decide who does and does not "deserve" a vote in Congress?

"not allowed to vote on the House floor.... D.C. residents have no representation in the United States Senate. "

A tiny plot of land like DC doesn't need the power of having 2 senators. If they want more representation, then they should be allowed to vote for senators as part of the socialist state of Maryland.

Also, the nation as a whole would benefit by not having two Marion Barry's whoring and doing coke while serving on the Senate.

Awe shucks, be honest about it at least.

Well considering I'm a registered Libertarian and I never vote Democrat, I hardly think that's the case here.

But thanks for injecting your partisan hackery into the discussion.

I'm all for democracy but just like Egypt, DC has proved they are not ready to make responsible choices

I was just stating the obvious. But thanks for confirming the basis of your effort here.

Those people that represent Maryland are without doubt influenced strongly by democratic socialist ideology. I don't care for that ideology and I don't want more of those people in office. If DC becomes a state there will be even more of them in office and even more of a chance their ideology will inflict this country more. I don't want that. Giving DC statehood would be like shooting myself in the foot.
