One thing that I think conservatives should do, if they really want to promote the notion of self sufficiency, is to create, implement, and promote policies that are designed to help Americans who are attempting to start small businesses. Part of the problem for small business owners, even those that are established, is that credit has become more difficult to obtain. This in turn has the effect of depressing demand because there are less people with money than there would be if credit was more generous. Here's an interesting article:

Why Small Business Lending Isn’t What It Used to Be

I think the party that championed policies that made it easier for people who are starting a business to obtain the financing they need, as well as other assistance such as giving advice about the best suppliers of various products, and demographic analysis, would be a very attractive position for people to buy into.

What do you think? Should the US government do more to help people become successful small business owners?

The biggest problem is that government imposes too many taxes, and too many regulations, which make it too difficult to start or sustain a business.

The very last thing any would-be business owners need is more “help” from the government. Government needs to get out of the way, and stop stifling existing businesses, as well as efforts to start new businesses.

The way for government to “do more” to help business is for it to do less.

Seems to me that the USA government is doing a bang-up job helping businesses become smaller. :doh

.

No, the government shouldn't.

They already upped the guarantees on SBA loans, and banks/credit unions who are authorized SBA lenders did increase their focus in that direction. The problem is writing an SBA loan is one of the most if not THE most difficult loan for any FI to make for many reasons. It really didn't help anyone.

The regulators have scrutinized collateralized loans at every bank/credit union to a degree that most of them can't and won't lend to businesses the way the once did. Overburdening through artificially elevating capital requirements as well as other massive regulatory burdens have had negative results on this country's business climate. Government intervention has hurt the small business market.

They need to stay out of it. They don't help anything.

Beat me to it. The government already offers a lot of help. What thwarts people more than anything else is over-regulation, making it harder to be and stay profitable. We need to dial back local, state, and federal regulations to a core necessity and leave people alone to spend time actually running their businesses.

Helping small business would run contrary to the goals of both major parties, since both are far more concerned with helping those big businesses who fill their coffers during election time.

Depends on what is being proposed that government do to help. I'd be in favor of unions helping more people be small business owners.

But the federal government can help: it can help by lowering taxes, lowering government spending, and reduce some of the regulations that are hurting small businesses.

But they need small businesses (and individuals) to fill the tax coffers after giving big businesses tax breaks.

Although I agree that the government should not over regulate and over tax businesses, I disagree that the last thing business owners need is more help from the government. I think the government could help by either guaranteeing loans if banks have credit requirements that are too stiff or directly lending to small businesses. The Fed and the US government loaned billions of dollars to the big banks when they were in trouble. Therefore the government could stimulate small business activity by providing loans that do not have credit requirements that are so stiff. Other things could be like providing services to help businesses find the most cost effective suppliers of goods and services. I would like to have some things manufactured, but for me, it will be trial and error to actually determine what's the most cost effective way to get it done.

I was just thinking that just as the government has various programs for people trying to buy a home, they could have similar programs to help people obtain inventory. Inventory loans.

The inventory loans could start with some small amount. After that has been repaid, the borrower would become eligible for larger amounts, thus establishing a reputation as a reliable borrower.

Another thing. Give tax breaks to small businesses that hire people who are on the unemployment rolls.

Well small business loans are certainly NOT easy to get. Let me ask you, because your appear to know something about it, why is it so difficult for financial institutions to write a small business loan?

What I have in mind with inventory loans is simple. Let's say you have started a small business and have invested $20,000 of your own money in inventory. The government could then make an inventory loan of 10 percent of that, or $2000 to you. If you pay that back in a responsible way, you would qualify for $4000. Pay that back you qualify for $8000, etc. I really don't see why that would be a big problem.

Reducing federal borrowing/spending/taxes would free those funds to be borrowed by (invested in or spent at?) private businesses. Taking from some to help others sounds wonderful only if you trust the government to make much wiser decisions than they have shown to make so far.

It isn't hard for them. They will give loans to credit worthy borrowers.

The government should not be in the lending business.

Reducing federal expenditures and taxes does not necessarily translate into money being made available to private businesses. The banks have to be willing to lend.

Loaning money too small businesses is not necessarily taking money from some to help others. If the money is paid back with interest, that is not the case.
