You want to hear funny about fake outrage? I live in New Zealand and we teach a bit about the comparisons of European effects on the native Maori to the Native North American Indians... the Kiwis used to say just Indians until I got here 8 years ago, but that is no biggy... I was running a meeting of teachers in my room one day and had the Native North American Indians on the board for the next lesson and one teacher starts in on me about how they disrespectful and out of touch I am. How that is degrading to the Natives and how in fact it is actually insulting to call the Apache (for example) ... Apache since some times those names were bestowed upon them by their enemies and adopted by the white man ignorantly and how all NNAI's want to be referred to as First Americans, how that is PC. I tried talking a bit with him but he started getting angry!! Can you ****ing believe that ****? Some white New Zealand European descendant liberal asshole getting all up in arms about American Natives. I told him to take a hike and leave my room and some other teachers were shocked but smiled when I told him off.

Better yet, the team could spend half their salary cap to hire the best kickers in the known world, and name themselves the Punting C***s.

This is what I was going to say -- it doesn't matter if we find it offensive. It's what they find offensive that matters.

Personally I don't see why any of it would be considered offensive. They've been called "red men" for as long as I've been alive, and only recently, in this "touchy, feely, everybody gets a trophy" world did they seem to become vocal over it. Could be a case of, "How dare those white devils call you this? You should be upset!!" 50 to 1, it started out with a lawyer.

Aztecs were a terrible lot. Let by their facist leader Montazuma (who thought he was a God) they set out to rule the known world. Besides having a sorry human rights record that gave no rights to women and allowed slavery, they would take many of their captured victims and cut their hearts out on top of their temples.

Now the Native tribes who were part of the current United States, weren't quite as offensive, but the Commanche were the most brutal, worse than the Apache and Yaqui.

Is it still PC to name helecoptors after Indians?

I would agree. the only one which stands out as a pejorative is REDSKINS. They need to change that.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

But why? I don't get butthurt when somebody calls me white. Black people don't get butthurt when somebody calls them black. Hispanics don't get upset when somebody calls them brown. Why do Indians feel the need to be offended over something that only very recently started bothering them?

They are just looking for money, in my opinion. Which Nation is yelling the loudest? Are they a wealthier Nation, like the Oneidas who have opened Casinos, hotels, etc, or are they a poor Nation, like the Onondagas, who like to sit around and be jealous of everything the Oneidas worked hard for and built?

"Mexican" is the term given to the Christian mestizo culture that was created with the merging of spanish and native influences. Aztecs are native Indians. The mascot was probably shosen because San Diego is close to the Mexican border.

Please note that this thread and poll are asking for YOUR opinion. If you feel the need to defer to others and their opinions, then this thread is not a good match for you. You may choose multiple options.

"None" would mean not choosing any of them.
Out of curiosity, do the Native Americans those team names reference think they're racist?
