Russia, ISIS or Ebola?

Which is Worse?

I'm a biology student, trust me it's ebola.

None of these have any possibility of happening, especially not the ISIS and Ebola "threat" you speak of.

So far Ebola has a Basic Reproductive Rate (Ro) of 2.0. For every sick person, two more get ill. Duncan in Texas infected 2 nurses, who were supposedly protected. And it will, if not treated better, be so on and so on.

Which of these ongoing potential problems is worse and more likely?

Threat #1

Conventional conflict over Ukraine with NATO and US, possibly escalating to nuclear war with Russia..

-- Russia says they're trying to support a truce in Ukraine, but by announcing new sanctions that are expected to be formally approved on Monday, the EU's leadership "is practically sending a signal of direct support to the 'party of war' in Kiev.

Britain said on Friday it could contribute 3,500 troops to a NATO rapid response force defending against new threats like the Ukraine crisis. The rapid reaction force is meant to reassure former Soviet satellites such as Poland and the Baltic states that fear an emboldened Russia will turn its sights on them. --

Threat #2

ISIS attacks on US soil with devastating results, possibly even knocking out the power grid, crippling the US for months..

--
When Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel warned last month that the Islamic State (IS) is an “imminent” threat to the United States, a number of lawmakers and analysts seized upon that claim.

“This is really the first group that has the wherewithal in terms of financing” to potentially strike on US soil, said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) of California, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee. IS, also called ISIS and ISIL, has “heavy equipment, heavy explosives, the ability to move quickly.”

Indeed, many have argued that IS now represents a far greater prospect of peril to US interests than Al Qaeda does. --

Threat #3

Ebola virus spreading slowly thru the US, possibly becoming more infectious thru mutation.
Z-mapp and other inoculations either can't be manufactured fast enough or lose effectiveness..

-- Obama told NBC's "Meet the Press" that the Ebola outbreak, which has killed 2,100 people in African five countries, was unlikely to spread to the United States in the short term.

But he added there could be implications if Washington and other powers did not send urgently needed equipment, public health workers and other supplies to the region.

"If we don't make that effort now, and this spreads not just through Africa but other parts of the world, there's the prospect then that the virus mutates. It becomes more easily transmittable," he said in the interview broadcast on Sunday.

"And then it could be a serious danger to the United States," he added. --

Russia would be the only real threat in there. ISIS has no ability to affect us, and is mostly a result of our own intervention and meddling. They have no real power to hurt America. Ebola...what 3 people? Out of how many? Yeah, that's not even close to being a concern. And really, I don't think Russia is that big of a threat to us proper, but certainly poses the greatest danger to the US and its Allies proper.

Hardly an epidemic eqivilent to the Spanish flu of 1918-20

Imagine that, just 3 sick people so far have taken a 1000pts off the Market's totals? Hope there's not more?

Who gives a ****? Wallstreet is all made up numbers for rich people to get richer anyway. At this point, there is no real threat to America from Ebola. And people can freak out, and markets can take brief dips, but it will recover fine and dandy in short order and things will go on. They hysteria over this is manufactured by government and authoritarians to excuse growth of government. Hell, we even have an Ebola Czar now....like government bureaucracy can somehow thwart biology.

I wrote this OP over a month and half ago. And like you said, nothing you or anyone else here says will thwart biology. You can repeat "hysteria and panic" till your face is blue. Only real world efforts to spend what it takes to stifle it now have a chance. Because, I guarantee that if we get numbers into the hundreds, then thousands, it's game over, health system overrun. This won't be the world, financially or socially it is right now.

All three of those issues pale in comparison to the economic harm continually being done to this country by our inability to stop with the trickle down nonsense. All three combined are nothing to how much we're hurting ourselves every time we yammer about "job creators" instead of actually helping people in this country. Our greatest enemies aren't without, they're within.

Oh, and of course climate change. But this country is deluding itself about that, too. Why can't we focus on the things that are actually going to hurt us instead of these fanciful boogeymen?

Any one of the three has the potential to cause mass casualties. More information would be needed to properly rank the 3.

It'll take a couple months before know enough to say if this is going to spread or be contained. Then of course there's usually a second wave for many viruses a few months to a year later.

People who keep saying 'don't panic' don't realize that this is the only time to heighten protocols and be worried that after it's spread, then panicking is no good.

I was more or less meaning the numbers WHO and the CDC are crunching right now that are not being publicly revealed, which goes for the ISIL and Russian threats: we're not privy to the information the government is, like intercepts.

There are published reports that aren't very settling, but they're mostly for Africa, not the US. Though if Africa hits 1.4 million, it'll become global within 3-6 months.

In the worst-case scenario, the two countries could have a total of 21,000 cases of Ebola by Sept. 30 and 1.4 million cases by Jan. 20 if the disease keeps spreading without effective methods to contain it. These figures take into account the fact that many cases go undetected, and estimate that there are actually 2.5 times as many as reported.

I am not the slightest bit worried about any of the 3(4) listed 'fears'.

I fear lots of things, but not these which are little more then nuisances for me (unless you live in the Ukraine, ISIS territory, West Africa/have/may have Ebola and/or are 'all in' for the markets - none of which applies to me).

I am far, FAR more concerned about the public/government paranoia that these events will incur which will cause more and more rights to be taken away from law-abiding people in the name of 'government protection' or 'national security' then I am about the events themselves.
The American masses predilection to panic at the remotest sign of trouble never ceases to amaze me.

Take Ebola? What are there; four confirmed cases (that are still alive) in America and the masses just go on and on, the media won't shut up and Obama hires an 'Ebola Czar' (?!?). An Ebola Czar...for 4(?!?) cases?

Thousands of Americans will die of the flu this winter and the masses don't even bat an eye. But four Americans have Ebola and 'everyone' starts freaking out and Obama hires an 'Ebola Czar'?

Grow a spine America.

I believe all are blown vastly out of proportion. Fear mongering is the way the media gets viewers and politicians gain supporters.
