Who is responsible?

Not exactly.

In the case of someone like Kate Upton her body is her primary asset. From a purely business perspective she should take any and all reasonable actions to preserve her image...just like Warren Buffet should protect his financial documents. Yeah, she got hacked and the hacker took something of value from her so he (presumably a "he") should be held accountable if caught but she should also be more cautious about what she does with imagery that might negatively impact her marketability.

Well I'm sure she will be. But the point here is that this hacking ability is scary. Sure, this time it's some naked pictures, and you can avoid that next time by not having naked pictures. But that doesn't really solve the problem at hand. People are going to use computers and cell phones. They are a necessity today. So how can we make sure our sensitive information will be secure? It's unreasonable to expect everyone stop online banking, shopping online, filing their taxes online, or storing financial documents electronically.

What I want to know is when McKayla Maroney will be arrested for child pornography... after all she has admitted that she took photos of herself naked when she was underage and that is a not allowed in the US as we have seen before...

Whether it's a crime depends on the relevant criminal codes, but I think it probably should be.

But my name isn't Tom

maybe the laws won't apply to you then. no sense seeking out naked pictures on the internet when you have your entire neighborhood to violate.

We have privacy rights in this country, even a person poor personal choices,
should be kept private, unless permission is granted for it's release.

But that's not the way it works in reality and people have to take responsibility for their actions, including putting things they don't want to see online, even in a "secure" setting. If you don't want anyone seeing it, keep it on your own computer.

I wasnt actively seeking them on the internet but the title hinted that this would be a more interesting than it has turned out to be.

Yes everyone is entitled to privacy rights but everything you post is subject to hacking sad to say.

Rule of thumb don't post anything you don't want others to see or read, there is a risk with everything you do in life.

No ****, it is not 100% secure, nothing is. However there is a certain level of security that is expected from say, Amazon.com, online banking, IRS tax forms transmitted, and MANY MANY other things. To just shrug and say, "oh, well what do you expect you used the internet of course your stuff is going to be stolen" seems to ignore modern internet use of today...an internet that is used for almost everything. Amongst other things, when Target accounts are hacked and celebrities personal accounts are hacked, it is a reminder that we have everything on the internet now and thieves (/hackers) are trying to take advantage of that, and continuous upgrades on securing data is required. However, just because someone gets their account hacked...or car broken into, you don't say "oh, well what do you expect you drive a car of course it is going to be broken into" seems callous and silly.

It only seems silly to the folks who go through life ignorant of the technologies they use daily and depend upon. The web was not built for security. Security is aftermarket. Now, banks and such, you know if they are hacked that they are insured and the customers will have their accounts restored. Same thing with credit cards. Once again, if you're going to use the web for what it was never designed to do, your best bet is to not be low hanging fruit. Follow best practices. A celeb posting naked pics to the cloud, NOT a best practice.

I can never decide if these indiscretions are actually ever 'leaked' or not. Depends on the 'celeb', I suppose.

If I make an online purchase, I EXPECT my billing information to be kept private, even if it is stored online.

Those of you who are blaming J-Law for uploading nude photos to a secure server are basically telling me that I should never make another purchase online.

If you do it should be with minimal info. That's the way I do it. Private pictures in my household are never put on to a connected computer and the cameras that take them too. They sure as hell are never taken with a phone. I suppose if my pictures did get out it I would expect that people who see them would wish they hadn't. "My eyes, my eyes, I can never un see what I've just seen. My eyes have been tortured. Oh the humanity. Shoot me now!!!"

Jennifer Lawrence Nude Photo Leak Isn't A 'Scandal.' It's A Sex Crime.

Scandal or Crime?
Owner of the photographs responsible or leaker responsible?

Personally I can't believe the number of people that claim it's the owner of the photographs fault for taking them in the 1st place. They have a right to privacy.

If you don't want them to get out don't take them. That simple. I sympathize with the victims to a point, but they became victims because of foolishness on their part.

I have seen no one out there making any claim that it is the owner of the photographs fault. Reasonable people almost unanimously agree it is a crime and the celebrities are the victims. A few months or years back something similar happened to Scarlet Johanessen. The hacker who got her pictures off of her phone got a ten year sentence which I think was well deserved.

A few people in an online forum does not count.

I have been somewhat curious what motivated the hacker who is responsible for this I am not sure if he got money or did it for glory in the hacker sub culture.

The quote in your OP is very curious however. I do not see much of a link between invasion of privacy for nude pictures and sexual assault and rape. All people male or female have to be taught the difference between right and wrong at one time or another in our lives. Telling women not to protect themselves and emphasizing telling men not to rape or assault is implying that rapists and assaulters do not know the difference. Which means it is implying they need to be excused for their crimes because they just did not know it was wrong.

Telling women to protect themselves and excercise good judgement and caution is not excusing the attacker.

For me, this is a non-story at best and perhaps a publicity stunt at worst.

How is it that all of these famous and near famous women have readily accessible nude pics on the internet in the "cloud" and they all happen to get "leaked" and discovered at the same time?

Beside the "crime" aspect of the story, what's really the harm here?

All of these women are actresses - by the very nature of their profession of choice, they are extroverts and attention seekers.

All of these women had nude pics taken, and not surreptitiously - displays an affinity to the exhibitionist side of their nature.

All of these women had nude pics uploaded to the internet - displays an even larger affinity to the exhibitionist side of their nature.

All of these women are idiots - every brainless teenager has had it beaten into his/her head that anything you put on the internet can and may be accessed by someone other than those you want to share it with - every employer is using the internet as a tool to scour the earth to find every piece of "private" information uploaded when deciding whom to hire.

Bottom line - putting aside the fact that nude photos of me would be a crime against society, you won't ever find any on the internet and I never have to worry about who might leak them because I have the half-a-brain necessary not to upload such to the internet.

The responsibility for this scandal lies with the person who committed an illegal act to obtain them. Their privacy was violated and the people who took the photo's share in no responsibility for this leak.

Will someone please post the pics?

Pure and simple, theft of personal property. The criminal is the person who stole and who leaked them on the internet.

Without a doubt the hacker, who illegally accessed the accounts of the victims, is responsible.

Whether it's pictures or emails, it's a federal offense to break into someone's online accounts and it comes with potentially hard time in jail. Whoever did this, should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Easy thought experiment:

If you are a woman, assume it is you.

If you are a man, assume it is your wife.

Now, how pissed are you? How violated do you feel?

The only mitigant I really see here is that Lawrence isn't a model (from what I understand) but one of the other big names (I can't recall, I have a difficult time caring about celebrities) is. In that case, given that pictures of her body is the product she sells, it might be less of a violation and more of a creepy theft.
